Goodbye Dr. Laura

We used to carry Dr. Laura on KVEC back during the Clear Channel days–before we wised up and dumped her for Sean Hannity.

You’ve probably heard the news by now. Dr. Laura went on cable TV Tuesday night and announced that she would not renew her contract at the end of 2010.

She got into a discussion last week on her show with a black woman caller. Dr. Laura went nuts and started using the so-called “N-word” repeatedly during the segment, accusing her caller of being ‘hyper-sensitive.”

Surprise, surprise. A firestorm of criticism erupted. Dr. Laura apologized repeatedly, but it wasn’t enough. On Larry King, she attempted to make an argument about first amendment liberty, but I’m not aware of the freedom of expression being extended to blatant racial slurs.

I don’t have anything against Dr. Laura personally, but a seasoned pro like her should know better. She screwed up and dug herself a deeper hole with a lame defense. I don’t think people are going to buy her as a “victim.”

We’ll cover this on this show Wednesday, maybe Thursday. Meanwhile, here’s the audio and the transcript. Decide for yourselves.

I apologize for the continued assault on your senses from SLO Conservative, aka you-know-who from Arizona. I’ll just keep deleting his comments and we can block him from the site, if needed.

Meanwhile, you can help the cause by simply ignoring him. Don’t respond to his comments. Don’t take the bait. Just ignore him. Thank you.

A-OK, Dave. It’s amazing how the J.D. from AZ stench/mental disturbance can be so easily detected from his postings, no matter how many pseudonym/disguises he puts on.

J.D., seriously, consider the reactions you get to your postings and consider some sort of reevaluation of your life and world view and mental health. I’m serious when I say I’m truly concerned about your mental health and hope you can open your mind toward getting some help. What you are doing cannot possibly be making your life, or those around you, more happy and healthful.

Dave was a friend of yours who gave you opportunities and has cut you all kinds of slack. And look how you treat him now. Something just ain’t right about that. Get a clue. Even your biggest critics here truly would like you to find some healing and get well.

I didn’t even know Dr. Laura still had a show. Interesting facts about Dr. Laura:

    1. Even though she’s made millions offering public therapy sessions over the radio, she is not a licensed therapist. her doctorate is in physiology (which is interesting because, in her n-word rant, she revealed that she doesn’t know that the color of a person’s skin is determined by the placement of melanin, not the amount of melanin).

    2. Dr. Family Values was estranged from her sister for around 8 years and was estranged from both of her parents until their deaths. Prior to her mother’s death, she hadn’t spoken to her for 18-20 years. Her mother died of a heart attack in her own home. Her body wasn’t discovered for two months. Dr. Family Values says she didn’t morn the deaths of either of her parents because she had no emotional attachment to them. She alleges no abuse by either of her parents.

    3. Dr. Family values also been divorced once and broke up two marriages by twice having affairs with married men. She married the second one.

    4. Dr. Family Values, who rabidly opposes a woman’s right to choose an abortion, once had an ectopic pregnancy. The treatment for ectopic pregnancies is an abortion.

Dr. Laura has been living a lie for years and the stress has gotten to her. This was her version of a “graceful” exit, one in which she gets to play the self-styled martyr. She’s a mental case if there ever was one. The amount of downright awful and harmful “advice” she has given over the years is a travesty.

If Dr Laura stopped at pointing out the double standard regarding the N-word without repeatedly using the n-word and thus bringing down the ire of the world on her, she would still be on the air in 2011 and beyond. There is a double standard regarding the N-word. Chris Rock does a hilarious comedy routine on how much he hates “f-in N-words” (of course, we all know that Chris Rock is black, and what the words he is talking about are). His piece goes on for about 10 minutes and the thing that I was left with, besides hurt sides, was that ONLY a black comic can do that routine. Micheal Richards, white guy “kramer” from the ‘Seinfel’ show, is a hollywood pariah because he said the n-word in his routine. When Rock does it, that is use the n-word repeatedly, he is clever, edgy, hip, relating to his people, funny, and no one says anything about it. I bet there are people on this blog that think I am making this up about Rock because they never heard this bit he does. Richards, on the other hand, was seen as an angry white racist comic trying to use the n-word to get back in the game and be taken seriously as something other than “kramer”. Does anyone remember when the NAACP tried to “bury the n-word”? In 2007, the NAACP held a funeral for that word claiming it was a product of slavery and needed to be put to rest. They even had a pine box for it and everything. Point is that even the NAACP recognized that the hypocrisy of “my word, not yours” diminished everyone that uses it, regardless of color.

I think that Dr Laura screwed up royally. No white person is immune from the career killing effects of the n-word. She’s a PhD so she had to know this. All of her other character flaws aside (thanks for the dirt on her Atty78), her biggest flaw is just shear stupidity. Michael Jordan has stayed out of politics his entire career because he understands that the other side buys shoes too. Jade called Dr Laura for help (whatever that says about Jade, I’ll leave for others to discuss) and Dr Laura did her an immense disservice by telling her that she isn’t seeing what she is seeing and then insulting her sensibilities by repeatedly using a word that Dr Laura had to know she was “hypersensitive” (Dr Laura’ word) to. By committing career hari kari with the n-word, Dr Laura voted herself off talk radio. Advertisers do not want to be associated with anyone that is too hot and controversial. I never liked the judgemental and condescending tone that Dr Laura takes with almost every caller. I’m sure she thinks she is just delivering hard truth or something; I think she is just an ass. Knowing that there are thousands of syndicated talk shows out there, she will NOT be missed and will fade into obscurity within weeks.

Wow, I actually agree with the bulk of one of Rich’s posts. (I even read all of it.) Is Hell freezing over, by any chance?

      High Five to you, Rich!

    • atty78
      August 19, 2010 at 8:47 pm

First, Rich, you must understand that black people rarely say the word “nigger,” they more commonly will use the word “nigga.” This may seem like a small point, but, if you have any black friends, they will explain to you that there is a huge distinction between the “a” and the “er.”

Nevertheless, yes, Rich, there is a double standard, but isn’t there good reason for it?

Black people have suffered subjugation and discrimination in this country for centuries. “Nigger” has been the verbal bullet of choice used in that subjugation and discrimination. Anytime a white person uses that word, it reminds blacks of that historical disadvantage.

It is only commonly accepted for black people to use that word because they were the ones against whom it was used. Their use of it threatens no one. And this double standard applies to everyone. We all are privileged to use derogatory racial language about our own respective racial groups. But, if Chris Rock told redneck jokes to Jeff Foxworthy’s crowd, I suspect he’d receive a less approving response than does Mr. Foxworthy. If Barack Obama called a white person a honky, he would receive a harsher response than would Rush Limbaugh for the same act. The reasons for this double standard should be easy to understand.

It is easier for stand-up comedians to get away with poking fun at other racial groups, but it is usually only acceptable if the comedian also jokes about his own racial group. While it is really difficult for white comedians to get away with joking about minorities, this is understandable because whites have been the dominant race in this country for centuries and have committed countless injustices upon minorities on the basis of race. It is threatening when the dominant group, after having committed social injustices against minorities for centuries, demeans a minority group.

(I will correct you that Michael Richards was not using the word “nigger” as part of his routine. He was using it to verbally attack a black audience member. Richards’ “nigger” comment was preceded by telling the audience member that “50 years ago,” the black audience member would have been tied upside down with a fork in his ass. Hahahah! Lynching is funny!?)

I’m OK with the double standard. I have no use for the word “nigger” other than to comment on its use. I am not black, but, generally, I am very offended by its use. It must be the way I was raised, but I can feel my muscles tighten up whenever I hear that word.

As far as Dr. Laura is concerned, I was actually more offended by her lack of understanding of what racism is than I was by her gratuitous repetition of “nigger.” But, mark my words, she will end up having a TV show on Fox News.

        Real quick, Atty78:

        1. Why are you equivocating on the word? Everyone knows what is MEANT when one says the n-word. So if DR Laura had said “nigga nigga nigga”, she would be okay? NO she would not be okay.

        2. Why make excuses for the double standard? So blacks are entitled to use the word but whites aren’t, period? As I said, Dr Laura didn’t call anyone the n-word, she just used it 12 times while talking about HBO performers, presumably black, that used the word. Other than the fact that a white jewish woman used the n-word, what really happened here?

        3. Obviously, you don’t get out to comedy shows very often. When a comic runs through their prepared material, they often (if not always) start riffing on the audience. That is part of the routine. Richards did say that to an audience member while he was improv-ing on stage. More a lack of talent, imagination and preparation than anything else.

        4. Chris Rock has done loads of material on redneck whites; Jeff Foxworthy has never done ANYTHING regarding blacks. That is just a fact.

        5. Really? You seemed pretty relaxed typing the n-word 6 times. Oh, i’m sure you were cringing every time you wrote it.

        6. I will mark your words because you are wrong. She won’t have a TV show anywhere (maybe Lifetime or Oxygen) especially not Fox. Come on! Seriously? You think anyone wants to be associated with an accused racist? Hell, Michael Vick was a pariah for brutalizing a bunch of dogs and it was hard for him to get a different team after serving prison. You honestly think Fox will give her a show? What she needs to say is that she said it because she is running for Senator Byrd’s seat and was just following in HIS footsteps. Then all will be forgiven.

This issue has very little to do with the “N-word”. “Dr.” Laura is a rude, angry, spiteful and misguided person who, along with some good advice, provides a lot of terrible, harmful “advice” and commentary, routinely on her show.

She should have been booted off the air long ago. If her heart was in the right place, this incident would not have escalated. Dr. Laura is a very troubled, disturbed woman and this incident is simply more in a long list of evidence supporting that.

But, typically, rather than taking responsibility for her own demise as a radio host, Dr. Laura has orchestrated this so she gets to play the “victim” and martyr, while fueling various degrees of animosity, racism and division within our society. Dr. Laura (along with many of her listeners) are a victim of her monstrous, out-of-control ego and self-delusion.

You’re arguing against imaginary positions. I never said it would have been OK if she said “nigga.” I was just pointing out that she is incorrect to state that black comedians commonly say “nigger.” They don’t. Black comedians will more commonly say “nigga.” I point this out because, to my black friends and other black people I have heard talk about the two words, there is a significant difference. She didn’t see that there was a difference and neither do you, so here I am helping you be a slightly less ignorant conservative white man from Paso Robles.

You’re wrong. the Chris Rock routine I originally referenced revolved around how Chris Rock “hated fuckin’ niggers” (being adult and using the actual words to make you happy; I DO cringe writing the n-word). Not “niggas” or anything like it. Yes, black guys will refer to their buds as “my nigga” or “nigga please”. But they also use the n-word. I am NOT the ignorant white man from Paso. My military service had me serving every day with blacks. At one point in time, a black buddy of mine named, I shit you not, George Bush, said to me, “Rich, you’re alright. You know what, you my nigga. And I’m yo nigga too.” To that I said, “Really, Bush? Well, let me try that out.” “Bush”, I said, “you my nigga.” (we were alone at the time) I looked at him, he looked at me… in silence. Finally I said, “Naw, man, I appreciate that, but I don’t think I’ll be saying that aloud.” He laughed and said, “yeah, it didn’t feel right even though I said you could.” My point here is that EVEN with permission, the words “nigga” or “nigger” are off limits to whites REGARDLESS of context. Black to black, okay; no white person gets to say those words without AUTOMATICALLY being regarded as racist.

As I explained in my post, I wasn’t really offended by her use of “nigger” because she wasn’t calling anyone “nigger.” She was merely talking about the word. I think this is really the only time it should be acceptable for non-blacks to say “nigger.” Shouldn’t we all be able to talk about a word like grown-ups instead of saying “n-word” or “f-word”? Her use of the word didn’t really offend me, other than the fact that she appeared to be repeating it only to bother the caller – given that the caller had expressed sensitivity regarding racial comments.

I explained that I was more offended at her lack of understanding about what constituted racism. She, apparently, thinks it isn’t racist to assume people of a certain race share common personality traits or athletic qualities. I was also much more offended by her statement that someone shouldn’t marry someone of another race if they don’t have a sense of humor about racist jokes.

I think the reasons for the double standard in use of the word are quite logical and understandable. But, if you want to say “nigger” so bad, leave Paso Robles, go down to Carson or Watts, stand on a busy street corner and scream it to your little heart’s desire. I have no idea what benefit you are denied by not being able to say it, but, obviously, it means a lot to you.

I will comment to say that nothing you said here was relevent. No one WANTS to say or should want to say the n-word, especially not me. My point here was that Dr Laura was trying to use the word to illustrate a point and she carried it too far. To even discuss the word and its uses and connotations has risks that the reader will infer that the person discussing it is doing so with racist tendencies. Again, I agree, Dr Laura sucked as a therapist and was an ass in general.

Actually, it’s funny you accuse me of not getting out to comedy shows because I’ve been to a lot of comedy shows. More than anybody I know in San Luis Obispo County. Going out of town to a comedy show in the Bay area or LA is one of my favorite things to do.

You obviously haven’t watched the Michael Richards video if you think he was doing his routine or improving comedy. He didn’t just call the guy a nigger, he made threats about lynching, too. He wasn’t trying to be funny. He was angry because he thought the guy was talking too much during his routine and tried to throw the most offensive things at the guy he could think of. Watch the video and tell me if you still feel that Richards was just “riffing on the audience.”

Yeah, maybe so. Both O’Reilly and Beck have had racial issues put against them. Most notably was Beck calling Obama racist. But neither O’Reilly or Beck were forced into resignation because they said “nigger” 12 times on air or on TV either.

When the Dixi Chicks said they were “ashamed” that Bush was from Texas, Where were all the “conservatives” that are now worried about defending “first ammendent” rights? I remember the “conservatives” were the first ones to pick up the pitch forks and torches to attack those entertainers for expressing a comparatively harmless opinion. “Conservatives” weren’t worried about being accused of being “hypersensitive” during that embarrassing time in our history. Maybe “conservatives” only think first ammendment rights should extend to hypocrites who repeatily uses a racially provocative word while scolding a black woman about being “hypersensitive”?
Even if you just take those offensive words out of Laura’s arguement, her “advice” was still tone-deaf and angry. I can imagine Laura sitting around the dinner table with her rich white friends using this same crappy analogy, “black guys call themselves the N-word, why can’t I call them an N-word”?

Do we really know that Dr. Laura was “forced” to resign from her radio show? I think she’d had enough and that the stress of keeping up her dishonest charade had taken its toll and she was ready to quit. Sometimes people don’t have the courage to quit and subconsciously create situations that force them to leave a job, especially if it involves someone who has railed against “quitters” in the past.

  17. californiawiseguy
    August 22, 2010 at 3:54 am

As I understand it, Dr. Laura was not forced to resign from her radio show. She has simply announced she will quit at the end of the year. I hope she sticks to her word, but based on her track record, I’m not sure.

With her ratings having dropped so much, this whole “N-word” thing might simply be a desperate plan to gain publicity and attract listeners. She has certainly raised her popularity among white supremacists and other racial bigots.

  18. September 3, 2010 at 6:32 pm

I am not a big Dr. Laura fan, but I did listen to the audio with the lady in question. I do not believe she is racist. Shoot, I know lots of black people who use and call each other the “N” work all of the time. In this instance, she used the N word in that context to explain that it is not always racist to use the word. If it is racist, than black are the most racist of all in my opinion. Once again, she was pressured by the media moguls and other racial groups to leave. I sympathize with her. In my opinion, black and hispanic people are much more intollerant and racist that whites are. I base this on my experiences.

    • californiawiseguy
      September 4, 2010 at 3:02 pm

There is no evidence that Dr. Laura was forced to resign from here show. It is just more histrionics from a dysfunctional drama queen who has no business giving advice to anyone. She’s unhappy and here life’s a mess as it has been for years. She’s total phony who is in desperate need of psychological healing herself.

“Crunchers” prejudiced comments above, making broad, negative generalizations stereotyping entire ethnic groups, is clear evidence of racial antipathy.
