An Historic Week

Well, it’s only Tuesday and already this is turning out to be a pretty dramatic week on several levels. President Obama appointed Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court this morning, of course subject to Senate confirmation. The Republicans can huff and puff all they want, but it will take a major red flag to keep the first Latina and only third woman off the High Court. Now I know she’s no Harriet Miers, but looks like a good, smart, first pick for the President. I suspect he’ll get at least two more shots at shaping the Supreme Court.

Of course, closer to home, we had the California Supreme Court decision on Prop 8 this morning. No surprise. I think everyone expected the court to uphold Prop 8. The court is throwing it back on the voters — the only question is whether they go for 2010 or 2012. I say 2010. You can go ahead and pollute this thread with any argument you want against gay marriage, but it doesn’t matter. It. Will. Happen. In. California. It. Will. Happen. In. This. County. Even Jack Hardy admitted it tonight. President Obama will deal with it directly during his second term.

Meanwhile, Karen Velie and Dan Blackburn are raising serious questions again — this time about whether or not authorities at Santa Margarita Elementary School took a threat of violence seriously enough from a young student. Fox News picked up the story tonight from CalCoastNews. More good work from our local watchdogs.
