Paving/Saving Mitchell Park

Mitchell Park in San Luis Obispo is one of my favorite spots and it’s going to be the subject of a lot of media attention during the next week, or so.

Briefly, the SLO Senior Center, which is located at the corner of the park by Santa Rosa and Buchon Streets, has been trying to get city permission to pave over park land behind the building for off-street parking. City Council is scheduled to consider a proposal to amend the General Plan to allow this at their May 6th meeting. All the city advisory bodies have come out against this idea — the General Plan currently calls for the area to be a community garden.

I am against the parking lot. If the Senior Center has outgrown its space, then we need to move the Senior Center. And having seniors drive in and out of a parking lot right next to a playground doesn’t strike me as a great idea.

Stephan Lamb and Christine Mullholland will present arguments against the parking lot proposal on my show Wednesday from 3:30 to 5. Mayor Dave Romero, who supports the idea, will join us on Monday, May 5th during the same time frame.

Should be an interesting discussion. Tune in and call in!
