Supes Heating Up Again

OK, here’s what reliable sources are reporting around town about upcoming county supervisor races:

~In District I, Harry Ovitt has told everyone yes, he is running for a 5th term, and is unafraid of
Paso Robles mayor Frank Meachum.

~To get re-elected, Jerry Lenthall has pledged to raise twice as much as his previous county record of
$250,000. Lenthall also asked Allen Settle if he planned to run against him, and Settle told him “Absolutely not.”

~Tom O’Malley is having second thoughts of running against Jim Patterson, though Tom Bordanaro is
trying to convince him otherwise. The pitch goes: People will have forgotten about the Wal-Mart shenanigans by next year.
(Note to either Tom: That ain’t going to happen).

~What do Jerry Lenthall, Tom O’Malley, failed Supe candidate Rodger Anderson, and Tom Bordonaro all have in common?
They all use the same far right Republican consulting firm, Meridian Pacific from Sacramento.

~Finally, nearly 4 years out, speculation has already begun over who will run for Katcho’s seat once he retires at the end of his 3rd term, (as is widely believed): There are 3 AG city council members interested (Jim Guthrie, Joe Costello, and Ed Arnold) as well as Nipomoans Mike Winn and Jesse Hill. Another wild card: former Grover Mayor Peter Keith who has a house in AG. Tony Ferrara, the mayor of Arroyo Grande, would love the job, but he is expected to move out of the area once his current term ends.

The sup races always come down to individual rights versus the collectives rights.
It just depends on which way the pendulum is swinging.

Lenthall is owned, and now his owners want to make certain that their investment keeps on paying. Very macho of Lenthall to brag about how much special interest money he can raise.

And it’s sure not hard to match his votes and use of authority with his donors.

We need to be rid of the good ole boy network if our county is to survive. Let’s start with Lenthall.

Mel in Avila: We need to be rid of the good ole boy network if our county is to survive. Funny, that is exactly why I voted for Patty Andreen for Supervisor, I did not want a continuation of the “good ‘ole boy” network. Between Mike Ryan, Harry Ovitt and occasionally Katcho, the “g.o.b.” network did not serve the greater citizenary of San Luis Obispo. Jerry Lenthall simply took Mike Ryan’s place on the g.o.b., but Jim Patterson and Bruce Gibson have infused our board of Supervisors with a breath of accountability for the citizens, not just the developers.

Now let’s get a Third vote in the Third District, and we’ll have some true independence and accountability, as well as another vote that defends our quality of life from sprawl and ruin.

Bob from SLO… Jim Patterson and Bruce Gibson are part of the g.o.b. network, just a different network then the one you dislike and distrust. You can’t see the g.o.b. network of Gibson and Patterson because you and Mel in Avila are part of that network. And if you do not know what network I am speaking of, you pretty niave.

And just in case someone doesn’t realize it….this IZ the LEFT WING SLO blog……and mostly the lefties are the only ones left blogging here as the rest of us are mainly just sick & tired of participating in the left wing agenda blog. NOT afraid….just a waste of time Dave….we have more in our lives than promoting your left wing agenda. And listening to your show..given your bias is another waste of our time. Too bad…as it used to be nice when it truly was LOCAL “Hometown Radio”. But guess what Dave…not ALL your “Locals” are left wing. So you are losing part of your audience…..a big part. Perhaps one of these days someone else will do a “Hometown Show” that won’t be so Left Wing. But of course you can’t even imagine that….it’s ALL about YOU. Sorry…but I’ve had it & I think others have too. I will fill my listening hours elsewhere or with other persuits.

    golfingslo: you pretty niave.
I really don’t like sounding so petty, but did you mean to type: “you are pretty naive?
If that is what you meant, then, yes, I am pretty naive since I don’t know what you mean about Gibson and Patterson and me being a “good ‘ole boy” network. As far as I can see, Supervisors Patterson and Gibson may network with each other as Supervisors with the purpose of bringing the backroom dealings that have gone on out into the sunlight so as to clean up what shady transactions have gone on before. Other than that possibility, I do not know or understand what you mean. Please explain what you mean.

Bob from SLO… yes I did mean you are pretty naive, thank you for correcting my typing skills. when you say you do not know the network of Gibson and Patterson, are you saying that they govern and make decisions in a vacuum, they are beholden to the people that helped elect them, just the way the other g.o.b is beholden to their peolpe. If you do not belive that Gibson and Patterson are beholden to their network, that is why I say you are naive.

  11. Citizen Interest
    March 21, 2007 at 1:09 pm

I recommend that golfingslo look at the campaign reports from Mr. Lenthall and Mr. Ovitt, and compare to those of Patterson and Gibson.

What you will discover is that the first two, rake in very many big donations ($2000 and more) from developers and special interest groups, and the other two funded their campaigns mostly on $100 and $200 contributions from individuals.

So please describe this ‘network’ that the two members of the BOS’ minority are beholden too. A little research (try it, you’ll like it!) will show some rather disturbing links between what Lenthall and Ovitt vote on and how they use their power, and who has given them large campaign donations.

  16. Marilyn
    March 22, 2007 at 1:47 am

I looked at the photos of the burning flag and effigy:

Firstly, I see no Code Pinkers in the crowd.

Secondly, how do we know what that effigy stands for? It is in military uniform but the face is definitely something else. I would argue it is a symbolic protest against militarism in general, not the soldiers. The effigy represents death (that is why you have the skull) and is a reminder that that is what war is about, death.

There is nothing offensive about burning flags and effigies. What is offensive is the actual and DAILY slaughter of civilians in war. But of course, Arab lives are cheap and the incinerated children of Iraq and Lebanon can be killed without even a glance, but let’s all get worked up over a dumb mannequin.

I can paste a link to all the children incinerated by Israeli bombs, here is one. Scroll to the bottom of the blog and see if you can get offended.

The victims of war are, of course not only civilians. The rare images we see and stories we hear sober many of us and show that there is nothing good that comes from all out war. Our veterans have not been spared the carnage.

Don’t you dare lecture me about how cheap arab lives are to the United States. You are the very person who does not care about the half million people that Saddam slaughtered. You seem to be the one that supports the Taliban of Afganistan. You support the Iranians in their quest to get and use nuclear weapons, biological weapons, and the use of children to attack democracy. How can you even say you have compassion woman? You do not care. They are pawns in your quest for power. Simply, sick.

Are you denying that Code Pink had anything to do with this protest in Portland? Better check your facts before you answer? I will find out, if you will too. Peace Out.

New Tone: Your comment doesn’t seem to address the topic of the thread in any way, shape or form; are you simply trying to stir things up or do you have something of substance to add to the current topic? Marilyn does make a good point about the burning (buring?) of the effigy- a military type uniform with a skull sitting where a head belongs. There were no markings on the uniform to indicate that this uniform was supposed to represent an American Soldier, so Marilyn’s theory that the effigy represents militarism; don’t you see that as a possibility? As for the flag burning; I don’t like to see the American Flag being burned, it disturbs me. It is not against the law, however so the right to burn an American Flag does exist. I did find it interesting that the flag was being displayed upside down which is supposed to represent that our country is under duress.

Again, I am more and more believing that you really do have good intentions, but are simply afraid to look at the truth. Don’t you understand that Hezbolla wants what is depicted in your first link? They WANT it and provoke it. They dress as civilians, and USE by mixing with them, and provoke attacks. The do not care about the civilians, they actually desire them to be hurt and killed so they can exploit their deaths in their war against israel. So, sadly, I have to believe you do not care by your support of the terrorists and their activities.

As for the Marine, how sad yet how beautiful that they are still married. Unlike the author states, marriage is not about looks, but about the person. How shallow and deceptive to believe the look in the bride is that of uncertainty. Looks are fleeting, and true love is in the heart and human spirit. Too bad the cowards that sent the poor soul to do the suicide attack on this particular soldier did not have the courage to fight or the brains to talk. Very sad indeed.

Bob, this happens to be an open forum that we can discuss the topics of the day, no matter the topic that Dave has selected to start out the discussion. Dave will never put any of these titles so I am helping you in your quest for truth.

Here is Gore’s REFUSAL on record to consume no more energy than the average person. He apparently believes he is of a class that does not need to live as he preaches. That is for the masses and not the intellectual class such as Gore.

    Senate committee on the Environment

Dr. Martinez, what do you think the significance is that the sun is apparently hotter than it has been? Do you think it is possible that the sun may have some significant effect on our earth and other planets such as mars and venus warming. Can you explain how we have caused the ice caps on venus to melt. Oh, you are just so smart. Those politicians that question global warming, are only politicians. Those politicians that believe in global warming caused by man are informed and smart. You are a joke Dr. Martinez. Science is science. Where are your facts? It is a theory DOCTOR.

New Tone: Nice try. Your “link” was not to the “official” website, but it was a press release by an aide to the Minority leader, Senator Inhof. If you remember, Senator Inhofe was the majority leader in the last Congress, and when the Republicans lost the majority in the November elections, Senator Inhofe’s last official act as chairman of the Committee on the Environment was to decry a children’s book that mentioned, (gasp!) Global Warming! Why use your last official act of chairmanship on this particular book? Perhaps looking at the record of Senator Inhofe having garnered more campaign donations from energy and timber lobbyists than any other elected official beside the President might have something to do with it. New Tone, you want to talk about science, how about Senator Inhofe’s belief that Antarctica is gaining ice, when NASA has proven that Antarctica is losing its ice mass. As for the Majority press release on Al Gore’s appearance before the Committee on the Environment, follow the link and read. Oh, and as for the scientific method, there is a protocal for what constitutes science.

Certainly, anyone can see that the real Dave has not responded to me yet. Am I a master of debates like Dr. Martinez is? certainly not. Did Algore refuse to commit to the same pledge that he demands that others do in his own fictional movie? He certainly did.

YOur right Bob, I realized when you pointed it out that it was not an official senate website. The majority leader a politician too, and wants the global warming issue so they can control, collect, and be above the restrictions.

I am surprised no one has the courage to say how horrible the photos are the our own Marilyn posted. The more I think about why she posted them, the more I am saddened and disturbed that she used them at all. The sick child really proves my point that hezbolla and Iran really are using these instigated civilian deaths as propaganda, and our own Marilyn is not above going for that angle too. The Marine wounded by a suicide car bomber both saddens me and makes me think of how shallow liberals must be. Marilyn, just becasue that man is wounded, does not change who he is and who he was as a person.

Marilyn, looks don’t matter so much, they are temporary with anyone. From what I remember, you have a child so at some point even you had at least a short relationship with the opposite sex. See, it is about the spiritual connection, not just the physical. Think about it.

Mr. Lenthall will have a much harder time getting re-elected than he may think. “I’m-in-charge-now” Jerry lied to the people about the Dalidio project to get elected (“I’ll honor the vote on the Dalidio Marketplace” and “it won’t cost the people a single penny in tax money”) Now he wants the people to pay for the roads the project needs through a tax district. Notice the word “tax” – duh. That’s just one example of his pre-election BS.

It’s apparent that Mr. L is working for someone other than the citizens of District 3. He even sent out literature with the return address of private developers. Ryan lost and so will Lenthall. I don’t care if he raises a million dollars, the people still own that seat and will give it to someone else in 2008.

    Yeah! Down with Lenthall!

When he’s not lying, he’s doublespeaking. When he’s not doublespeaking, he sits mutely,
twirling a pen on his face. Honestly, go to a Board meeting and see how dismally dumb Lenthall is. He’s the biggest empty suit the county has ever had the dishonor of electing.

  32. Bob from San Luis

New Tone: His name is Al Gore, not Algore. His movie was a documentary, not a work of fiction. Challenge his assertions, his facts and/or methods, but the movie was not a work of fiction. Am I disappointed that he does not take every available step he could to be more green? Certainly; he still is making a difference in educating as many people as he can to the difference that can be made yet.

The suggestion that the Democrats want to use Global Warming as a political issue does not surprise me at all. Politicizing anything and everything is a speciality of the Republicans, so now that the Democrats are in charge, you, New Tone, and people who think like you, assume that all politicians would only act on a topic because of the potential political gain. How about acting on an issue because it is the right thing to do? Please understand that I have no delusions that Democrats can be just as manipulative as Republicans, but at this moment in history I believe that the Democratic majority in Congress is, for the most part, honestly attempting to make things better for the whole country.

As for the link with the pictures that Marilyn provided; yes, those pictures were disturbing. War is disturbing, ugly and unforgiving. Any country that makes war on another country without just cause is wrong, period. Israel has every right to protect itself, but I believe that they go to far sometimes. America rightly invading Afghanistan after 9/11 in going after the Taliban and bin Laden was just, but we went horribly wrong when we went to Iraq. The terrorists who use innocent children as a means to get past check points so they can bomb more innocent men, women and children is absolutely wrong. When we kill innocent men, women and children while going after those terrorists, we are wrong as well.

golfingslo: I have no illusions that the Democrats are pure of intent or action; it is politics, after all. On many issues I am very left leaning, almost socialist, but not quite. On other issues I am somewhat conservative; the Democratic Party at this time can effect change to make this country better. If I had my preference, there would be no political parties, no campaign donations of any kind; potential candidates would need to raise signatures to be eligible to run, the higher the office, the more signatures needed. Once those thresholds are met, public financing of all elected officials would disburse an equal amount of money to be spent by the candidates with no outside money allowed, and no 527 groups allowed to make commercials of any sort. Radio and t.v. spots would be provided free of charge on an equal basis for all candidates, and the Fairness Doctrine would be reinstated assuring that all candidates would get equal footing on all radio and television shows. Standardized ballots would be the law in every county in every state, and Instant Runoff Voting would be on every ballot race. When all of these steps are instituted we can finally have true “equal opportunity” elections so that any passionate candidate can run and have a reasonable chance of getting elected. True Democracy, even in a Republic like the United States of America. That is my ideal golfingslo, what is yours?

As an owner of a business I am shocked that you have fallen so far to communism and totalitarianism as to want an election systems as you describe.

The first amendment was created so that people can print what they want, and how they want to print it. Since before the revolution from Briton, handbills were covertly printed speaking out for and against the king. Controlling all communication by any candidates is scary. What if I want Bruce Gibson for president, are you saying I can’t put a letter on the blog supporting him? Do you think if I wanted to buy space in New Times to support him I should censored? What about banning the sierra club from endorsing a candidate?

Suppose I don’t want to pay for every person who can collect x signatures to run their approved communications to the masses via approved channels. Should they be allowed to run ads supporting their petitions?

What points of view should be included in the fairness doctrine? Two parties, three, seven? If Dave has one person on supporting one point of view, should he required to have one for the viewpoint of the other? What about the KKK view? The muslim view? Arab view? Where should it end, and who should decide and enforce these “fair” laws?

I could go on for ever. I don’t have time to write an essay on the subject. Bob, can’t you see how dangerous of a path it is to want the government to decide what is fair and acceptable in our country, control who runs and what they can say, and most scary of all how frightening it would be to silence the average person and limit the speech that they can hear. Scares the hell out of me. It is not the USA that I want and know. We are great because of the choices that we have. Venezuela and Iran do not have these choices. They have no choices of any type, political and others. They are controlled and don’t even know it.
