"I Have Never Seen This Country So Divided"

One programming note: Jerry Lenthall will not be on the show tonight, as previously announced, due to a funeral. We hope to reschedule Jerry for next week and will announce a new time soon. Instead, Lance Parker and attorney Rory McGinty join us on Hometown Radio. By the way, Radio-Tradio will run Thursday at 3:05.

I received this email from a listener who reads the blog, but doesn’t post. The irony is that he shares my exact feelings this morning. This is what he wrote, in part:

“While I check the blog several times a week, I’ve only posted once, not wanting to engaged in the mindless hate debate that so often occurs . . .

On that matter, I can not help but frequently recall dubya’s motto when he ran, “I’m a uniter, not a divider” What bull shit.

As a relatively young minded 70 year old, I have never seen this country as seriously divided as it is today and that includes Korea (the 50’s) and Viet Nam. Even Kent State did not rip us apart the way this prick has.”

Well, his language is harsher than what I would say, but I have the exact same feelings this morning and I was sharing those with a long-time conservative friend. We’re both tired. We’re tired of the name-calling and the venom. We feel beaten down into the ground by the charges and counter-charges and all the angry rhetoric. I was born in 1953 and I also have never this country so divided. Viet Nam seemed initially to be more a generational clash, but this is strictly Red State/Blue State, liberal verus conservative. Us vs. Them.

How worse can it get? We went from the failed reform of Social Security and the nightmare that was Katrina to the incompetence surrounding Harriet Miers and now to the nightmare that is Walter Reed hospital and the grim reality of Scooter Libby being convicted on four of five charges. Is it any wonder that the people of Vermont are now calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney. This isn’t about oral sex in the Oval Office. This administration has failed at every level possible, domestic and foreign.

And in doing so, President Bush has dragged us down with him, letting us snipe at each other, polarizing this nation. I fear the worst is yet to come.

With all due respect, Dave, if you and other liberals are tired of everything happening, here’s a news flash for you: YOU HAVE NOBODY TO BLAME BUT YOURSELVES!!!!!

You have never given President Bush a chance. The left wing has undercut him from the very beginning, challenging the election results, refusing to accept his “victory” as legitimate. Then when we were attacked on 9-11, you refused to get behind the President and support his War on Terror.

The man is not perfect, but he deserves kudos, not ridicule, for what he has tried to do in the face of the worst attack on country’s soil.

He acted in Iraq based on the intelligence given him and with THE FULL SUPPORT OF HILLARY and her left-wing cadre in the Senate. Things go back and the liberals run. That’s not a personal attack, Dave, that’s fact. Liberals lack the patience, the will, the guts to face down an enemy.

So give this guy a chance, Dave. Stop attacking him. Stop mocking him. Stop questioning his every decision. His critics are the ones dividing this country with their constant sniping.

    God Bless America!

Dubya IS a uniter. 90% of the world and over 70% of the American people are united againt his policies. It’s frustrating to watch him ignore everyone, even people in his own party, but his administration has less than 2 years to go. I still trust in our democracy to right the ship. We just have to ignore the blathering apologists in the meantime. They are loud, but a small minority.

    A bit of humor:

REPORTER: Mr. President, many people are saying you could go down as the worst president in history. How do you respond to that?

BUSH: Oh, no way. I’m much worse in English and Geography.

    Dave keeps fanning the fire…
GEE DAVE …what have YOU done to UNITE us?? Your blog has only become more devisive, and true to form you once again promote your hate Bush diatribe. I find I am more & more finding something else to listen to during your show hours. I’m sure I am not the only one….but when someone mentions this…you only shrug & say good riddance to you. It’s a sad time for “hometown radio”.

“The man is not perfect, but he deserves kudos, not ridicule, for what he has tried to do in the face of the worst attack on country’s soil.”

Hmmm, let’s see. Lied to the American public so he could justify attacking Iraq.

Has taken the Constitution and wadded it up like an ordinary piece of paper and thrown it in the trash.

The list goes on and on.

    Yeah, great President.

Why are you blaming Bush for Iraq? I told him it was a slam dunk that Hussein had WMDs… just like I told Clinton it was a slam dunk that Sudan was making chemical weapons for bin Laden.

Hey, hey, hey!!! Lay off my man, Bush. He let me get away with destroying classified documents I took from the National Archives, which proved that Clinton was getting a hummer and could be bothered about blowing up bin Laden in 1999. You wouldn’t believe the chaffing that those papers caused while in my pants. Bush is cool in my book.

anonymous #1: You have never given President Bush a chance. The left wing has undercut him from the very beginning, challenging the election results, refusing to accept his “victory” as legitimate. I think you got it more wrong than right, sir (or madam). The election results for the 2000 Florida ballots were not allowed to be challenged, because they were never completely counted in the first place. The suite brought before the Supreme Court by supporters of George W. Bush specifically asked the court to suspend the recounting of the ballots in Florida. George W. Bush was not elected in 2000, he was appointed by a 5 to 4 vote, along party lines (5 Republican members and 4 Democratic members). Even you put “quotes” around the word victory; maybe you have doubts yourself?
As for supporting the “War on Terror”; remember that President Bush had a near ninety percent approval rating right after 9/11. His first move (publicly) was to freeze the finances of those suspected in funding the attacks. That was followed by an incursion into Afghanistan to go after Osama bin Laden, the admitted leader of al Qada who took responsibility for the attacks. Where President Bush lost his credibility in the “War on Terror” is when he pulled our forces out of Afghanistan (thereby letting bin Laden get away) to prepare for invading Iraq, which had absolutely nothing to do with the attacks of 9/11. Justifying a full scale invasion of a country that had never threatened us, had no capability to harm us, and every single reason we have been given for going into Iraq has been proven false; that is why President Bush does not get full support for his “War on Terror”; along with not implementing security measures at our ports and borders, we are not really any safer now than we were prior to the 9/11 attacks, except we take our shoes off at the airport and can’t carry fingernail clippers on to the plane when we fly.
As for THE FULL SUPPORT OF HILLARY and the rest of Congress; please remember that only the White House had full access to all of the data used for justifying the attack on Iraq, and, please remember that only Democrats were targeted by the anthrax attacks in Washington, prior to the vote authorizing the use of force against Iraq. No Republican lawmaker was sent anthrax in the mail; coincidence?
Understand that I am not attacking you, your viewpoint or the data you used to form your opinion; I just don’t think you have considered all of the available data and facts.

so interesting, the first post in a blog about how divided we are, some anonymous asshole starts slinging mud against what they perceive as the other side. I’m so fucking tired of the divided nature of this country. Everybody id SOOO polarized – how the hell did this happen to us.

Dave. I have wanted to comment for some time. Your post “I have never seen this country so divided” got my interest- as I am “tired of the name-calling and the venom,…” which appears so frequently on blogs, talk-radio and now on TV network news.
“Liberal” and “Conservative” are divisive when used to stereotype singular arguments. Most people do not identify with either, and concerning the lawlessnes of America in waging war, most who identify as either are not ignorant, (nor uncertain) in denouncing the ineptitude, lies, crimes and cowardess of the Bush administration in exerting executive power though extortion, fear, and force, (in these past six years.)
Those who “see no evil” in this Republican “Cabal” ignore reality, just as an alcoholic denies the sickness that threatens life itself.
Most democrats in congress voted against the resolution “authorizing” the exceutive to wage war aginst Iraq.
Most humans did as well – and most want us out of the killing feilds.
If Democrcy means anything it is that division will always exist, but democracy based on truth, justice and peace mean that the will of most in opposing dictatorship and corporate dominance shall prevail.
Congress, all Americans and made up of liberals and coservatives, republicans and democrats; Christians, Muslims and agnostics; men and women; black, yellow, white and red, MUST not cowar in fear but must take back the Soul of our Nation.
Lest it does not exist “The Costitution” is indeed “on the table”.
Most conservative and liberals surely agree – Impeach Bush, Chenney and the rest whose crimes necessatate accountability by the people and for the people.

Actually it all started in 1988 with the Bush-Dukakis presidential campaign with those Willie Horton scare tatics and Bush senior wrapping himself in the American flag everywhere and questioning people’s patriotism. In that campaign, the Republicans succeeded in turning “liberal” into a dirty word.

Dave, I think it was more the famous Dukakis Tank picture. Also what else started around that time 1986-88 was the birth of the US against THEM talk radio format as we have it today. And some times you let your show fuel that fire in the pursuit of ratings.

    DAVE and assorted liberals,

You are such arrogant a-hole I cannot believe it sometimes. What do you when Bill Moyer says he wished that Cheney was killed in an attack? Did Bush do this to him?

Did this worthless democrat attacked in congress No. Take responsibility that you have in yourself. The left in this country is hateful. You just have to listen to Michelle from San Jose, S&M Bill with the spittle spewing from his mouth, or the anti-christian Dave Conglaton to know how hate filled the left is.

You even devote a show about a woman who says you can’t say FAGGOT without being sent to rehab (like the guy on Grey’s Anatomy). Do you think if you say that word, you need to go to rehab? What about that piece of shit movie Broke Back Mountain. I have heard that they say faggot quite a bit there? Please don’t compare gays with minority groups such as blacks which have endured hardships due to factors beyond their control. Gays have a choice to act out their perversion.

And that kook that wrote you in email, he must not have known very much about what was going on during the 60’s. I grew up hearing stories about the f*ing hippies and how they screwed up big sur, bombed police stations in SF, and how the blacks tore up their own property in watts in 1968. No, Bush has made us so divided huh? What about when we declared independence from Briton, we were very divided there too.

Wise up people. It is called debate. War is hell. Suck it up and go forward. USA USA USA

There are two types of people in this world:

    There are those who won’t let others be and who want to control everything and tell people how to live and what to believe in; they want the power of life and death through intolerance and fascist behavior under the guise of religion and morality;

    Then there is everybody else.

You want to know why we are so polarized? It is the fact that the Democrat Party politcizes EVERYTHING. For example, let’s lok at the Walter Reed scandal. All of the Democrats use WRAMC as an example of how Bush rushed us, even lied us, into an unnecessary war only to subject our wounded soldiers to inferior care at Walter Reed. Sec Harvey and the entire commnd staff at WRAMC were canned in the process. But what is the truth? Truth is that this whole “scandal” centers on 22 rooms of a 371 room building. That is 22 rooms of a 5,500 room complex, or 4/10ths of a per cent of the total number of rooms. But how bad were the rooms in question? Not one soldier or soldier’s family can show any harm that a soldier endured because of those 22 rooms of that one building. Furthermore my eyewitness sources say that every family they talked to at Walter Reed pointed to the erxcellent care they received there as the sole reason why they were goig to get right and be able to lead as close to a normal life as their injuries will permit. Yes, there was some peeling wallpaper in one room and a 6 square inch section of mildew in another among the other deficencies, but according to my source, it was NOTHING worth the job of the best Sec. of the Army in a quarter century. The rush to politcize every situation as a means of embarassing or even trying to destroy your political opponent before all the facts are in or even at the expense of the facts at hand is the reason why the US is so polarized. It is YOU, the Bush hating Leftists in America that is polarizing the country. You will stop at nothing, destroy as many lives as you can to get to the Bush Administration. The Battle for Iraq is the current manifestation of this, but not the first. The Leftists of America will burn their own house down if Bush was in it. You all wish Bush and Cheney DEAD and moan when terrorists fail. Bill Mahrer verbalizes what you all think. I think that if you disagree with that you are a liar. The Left of America has literally gone insane with rage and hatred at Bush and his administration. Worse still, is that facts and reason and logic are wasted on the clinically insane. Everything I said here will be dismissed out of hand by crazy people that only know how much they hate Bush and nothing else.

That is why this country is so polarized and why I no longer feel it necessary to waste my time trying to contribute to this blog.

AS FOR THE A NATION DIVIDED…ONE HAS TO COME TO GRIPS WITH THE QUESTION:
DID BOTH SIDES MOVE AWAY FROM THEIR CENTER…OR DID ONE SIDE MOVE FAR AWAY
AND THEN TRY TO JUSTIFY IT. CONSERVATIVE TALK RADIO IS A PHENOMENON THAT
WILL NOT GO AWAY BECAUSE THE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS NO LONGER TRUST THE
LIBERAL MAINSTREAM MEDIA, AND FOR VERY GOOD REASON…SO WE SEEK OUT THE
    TRUTH FROM OTHER SOURCES.
THE FAR LEFT IS THE RADICAL ELEMENT IN THIS EQUATION. IF YOU HAVE NOT YET
READ BILL ORIELLY’S BOOK “CULTURE WAR” I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST IT. EVEN
THOUGH I AM SURE IT WILL BE LIKE NAILS ON A CHALK BOARD FOR YOU. THAT IS
WHAT IS AT ISSUE. ALL THE REST FEEDS INTO THIS WAR OF THE CULTURES NOT ONLY
IN AMERICA BUT AROUND THE WORLD.

WE ALL SEEM TO SPIN NEWS TO SUPPORT OUR OWN POSITION ON THE ISSUES…NOTHING
NEW THERE. THE BOTTOM LINE IS, AT THE END, WHO WILL BE RIGHT? WE LIVED FOR 8
YEARS WITH AN IMMORAL, LYING, CHEATING CONNIVING SCOUNDREL (WHO GOT HIS
SLIMY ASS IMPEACHED!) AND YET NOTHING ESCALATED TO THIS LEVEL OF HATE THE
EXTREME LEFT HAS FOR BUSH. BUT THE HATE BUSH DRUM IS WORN OUT. THE DEMS HAVE
HAD CONTROL OF BOTH HOUSES AND YET NOT ONE THING IN WASHINGTON IS
DIFFERENT…NOT ONE! THE MAJORITY DON’T LIKE WHAT IS GOING ON IN IRAQ, I
KNOW I DON’T…BUT 58% WANT US TO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT SOME TYPE OF STABILIZING
VICTORY THERE. IF THIS WERE NOT SO THE DEMS WOULD CUT FUNDING AND END THIS
    BY MONDAY MORNING!

IT ALL SEEMS TO BE ABOUT THE 08′ ELECTION. I FOR ONE, CAN NOT SEEM TO FATHOM
THIS CRAP GOING ON FOR 2 MORE YEARS, BUT IT WILL…AND MORE AND MORE WILL
    GROW WEARY OF IT ALL.

THERE MAY BE SOME MIDDLE GROUND THAT CAN BE REACHED EVEN THOUGH I DOUBT IT.
IF WE PULL OUT NOW OR IN 6 MONTHS OR EVEN 2 YEARS AND THAT REGION IS NOT
STABLE WE ARE LEFT WITH A FLIPPING MESS OVER THERE. IF WE STAY AND ATTEMPT
TO STABILIZE THAT REGION (WHICH HAS NOT BEEN STABLE FOR 3000 YEARS) WE MAY
HAVE A CHANCE. I’M NOT SURE IF YOU WATCH THE FOX SHOW “24”…IF NOT YOU MAY
WANT TO TIVO IT. THE ULTIMATE EXPLOSION OF A NUCLEAR WEAPON ON AMERICA’S
SOIL WILL END THE NATION AS WE KNOW IT…MANY ON THE EXTREME LEFT WANT
THAT…BUT THE EXTREME LEFT IS A VERY SMALL MINORITY OF AMERICA, AND
ULTIMATELY THEY WILL FAIL TO TEAR THIS GREAT NATION APART.

SO WE HUNKER DOWN AND WAIT…POLITICALLY, MORALLY AND MILITARILY AND WAIT.
AS FOR ME I AM ON THE SIDE OF FIGHTING THOSE ISLAMIC ASSHOLES OVER THERE AND
NOT ON THE STREETS OF ONE OF AMERICA’S GREAT CITIES.
HOW SOON SO MANY HAVE FORGOTTEN 9-11! THOSE INSANE KILLERS DON’T WANT TO
    TALK! THEY WANT TO KILL!

    Rich,

Well, I know it must be tough for you to try and come up with apology after apology, defense after defense of this President, this administration.

I mean, just take March for example. One month that we’re not even halfway through. The nation is indignant over the Walter Reed scandal. Now it turns out that the Attorney General and the director of the FBI violated the law. In addition there is the scandal involving the mass firing of the federal prosecutors.

It must be wearing on you to try and figure out how to spin and defend that which is indefensible. Your dismissal of the scandal at Walter Reed doesn’t even warrant a response. It’s so lame that it’s almost unconscionable.

I know that your work for the military demands that you defend the Commander in Chief, but at some point you’re going to have to distance yourself from this guy. It’s only going to get worse in the next 22 months as more and more incompetence seeps out.

So I’m sorry if you don’t feel that you can contribute anything else to this blog, but I understand your situation. At some point, you just run out of good arguments.

  19. Rich from Paso
    March 12, 2007 at 4:47 pm

You see, Dave, that is why you and the left are full of shit and I am done with your blog: What I said happens to be 100% factual from a source at Walter Reed, but you don’t care. You are blind, patheitically blind, to the fact that there are people in this world smarter, more connected and more knowledgable than you on the subjects of the day, so you dismiss them out of hand. I don’t “defend the indefensable”, I tell the truth. You, my friend, spend your days hating Bush and seeing evil in everything in this administration is remotely touched with. You dismiss my Iraq opinions as dated even though I have 16 friends currently in theater RIGHT NOW. How many do you have in Iraq? Oh, that’s right, I forget. Mr. Cut-and-Paste calls the entire reporting staff of AP and the NYT as “Friends” in Iraq. Where is your courage to go there and see for yourself? You have none. It is far, far easier to throw stones at me from your Ivory Radio Tower here in the safety of the Central Coast than it is to get off your duff and get into the game for once in your life. you ran away from Vietnam and called names and now you run away from Iraq and call names. Your head is somewhere; either in the sand or somewhere else, but you have lost any semblance of objectivity on the subject of Iraq and this President. I will make a special effort to hear the guy from Iraq to hear what he has to say. Will you dismiss him if he agrees with me and not you? I think you will say things like, “But Staff Sergeant Garcia, the New York Times says…” And when he disagees with your world view and your opinion of Iraq, will you find excuse after excuse to discredit your guest the way you try to discredit me, another guest of yours? I think you will, but that is what you need to do in order to keep the myopic worldview you have formed, and your sanity, intact.

I leave the balance of my time open for you to dismiss this out of hand. Have fun in your liberal echo chamber that is now “Hometown Radio”.

  20. Dave Congalton
    March 12, 2007 at 7:24 pm

    Rich,

So here we go again. You know better because you have an “inside source.”

How about this from today’s headlines:

The Army forced its surgeon general, Lt. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley, to retire, officials said Monday, the third high-level official to lose his job over poor outpatient treatment of wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Kiley, who headed Walter Reed from 2002 to 2004, has been a lightning rod for criticism over conditions at the Army’s premier medical facility, including during congressional hearings last week. Soldiers and their families have complained about substandard living conditions and bureaucratic delays at the hospital overwhelmed with wounded from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

So if there’s nothing wrong at Walter Reed and we’re just blowing it out of proportion, why are the head people being fired and why is this yet another disgrace?

Face it, Rich. You guy is screwing up. Again.
