The Democrats Clean House

Well, as I get ready to ship out tomorrow morning and mingle with the international community for the next two weeks, I hold my head up a bit higher, walk a little prouder as an American. I’m starting to once again recognize my government in action after the last six years of being trapped in the dark abyss.

The new Democratic majority in the House held true to their word and beat the 100 hour deadline easily, passing great legislation about stem cell research, lower interest rates for student loans, increasing the minimum wage, etc. All good things. Now let’s see what they do about the war.

I know the conservatives love to attack Speaker Pelosi, but I think she’s off to a great start. From today’s headlines:

“The House wrapped up the Democrats’ “100 Hours” legislative sprint Thursday with time to spare, voting to recoup billions of dollars in lost royalties from oil and gas companies and roll back industry tax breaks.

The energy bill capped a two-week drumbeat of votes on legislation that, while popular with voters last fall, awaits a sketchy fate in the Senate.

The House bill, approved 264-123, sets a conservation fee on oil and gas from the Gulf of Mexico, attempts to recoup royalties lost because of a government error in drilling leases in the late 1990s, and rolls back several oil industry tax breaks.

“In the November election, the American people signaled their wish for change — a wish for our country to go in a new direction,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif. “Democrats promised that we would, and these past two weeks, we have delivered on our promise.”

Democrats accomplished their early legislative goals in 87 hours, adopting new ethics rules and passing bills raising the minimum wage, expanding taxpayer financed research into embryonic stem cells, forcing more homeland security measures, directing the federal government to negotiate for cheaper Medicare prescription drugs and lowering interest rates on subsidized student loans.”

    Folks, while you congratulate Pelosi on her “100 hours” accomplishments, keep in mind she has accomplished NOTHING. The Senate is going to kill the minimum wage increase because Pelosi herself raised questions of the necessity of the increase with her American Somoa exemption (i.e. if the minimum wage increase will damage Am. Samoa enough to need an exemption, what about the rest of America?) Plus, the Senate is going to add tax breaks for small business owners like Bob here that will be a poison pill for the House in the conference committee. The ethics “reform” is a sham, where Harry Reid’s kids can lobby the crap out of Congress so long as it isn’t dear old dad? Give me a break. Student loan interest reduction is going to make for MORE expensive college as kids will now be able to afford a higher tuition rate due to the money they will “be saving” with the rate reduction. The Energy bill will be another drain on the consumer at the gas pump as the energy companies raise prices to recoup the money that they are losing as the Democrats “correct” the mistake that Clinton made in 1998 with the royalties thing. Plus, they are making it harder for domestic producers to get oil which forces us to get our oil from the Middle East, the very place Marilyn would love to see less of the United States. Oh, and did you see that the Democrats removed the need for a supermajority to raise taxes? So, all you “rich” people out there with $200,000 in joint income, beware, Nancy is coming for your money. As I said, all of this is for naught as the Senate will continue to be the saucer that cools the tea and dial down the haste and zeal that the House Democrats put into their “100 hours” crap. 87 hours, my ass. It has been about 120 hours possible with a 10 hour day.

    All this “100 hours” nonsense proved was that House Democrats can screw shit up faster than Republicans and in less time.

    And once again the posts are showing how gullible people can be to the sound bite of the day. For anything to happen, both sides of Congress need to agree and the President sign. So why not wait until something actually gets done before we congratulate anyone. And for the record the House actually took 101 hours and 3 minutes, but whose counting.

    Nancy Pelosi starts yet another worthless congressional committee to study global warming and not even John Dingell thinks it’s a worthwhile enterprise.

    I do not have much hope in Clinton. She is more Republican than Democrat in her international politics and aggression.

    As far as FOX news is concerned, I wouldn’t buy that station for a nickel. If it were up to FOX news and the holy Crusaders, half the population would be spying on the other half; we would be lynching homosexuals, and we would be executing people for their political beliefs, and then we would become like Jordan, Iraq, and Nazi Germany. But, hey, those who can WILL.

    Yes, please, let us DO find those terrorist “cells” among us, the ones that beat their wives every day while pretending to be upstanding, religious, and patriotic citizens. Or, is it the ones that “buy” mail order brides from some East European country because they are terrified of their own women or think that women from such countries “know their place.” Or is it the people who cannot tell the difference between Hamas, Hizbollah, and al-Qa’ida but incite violence against fellow Americans without cause. That IS a form of terrorism when you threaten people and target them for political motives.

    Here is my response:

    I think that Bill Richardson has the best chance for the White House. He’s been a border state governor, ambassador and he’s hispanic. I have a lot of respect for Richardson and if it was a Democrat only election, I would vote for him.

    2) WHAT EFFECT WILL THE CIVIL WAR RAGING IN THE DEM PARTY HAVE ON THE PRIMARIES AND PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION?
    3) WHAT EFEECT DO YOU THINK THE CLINTONISTA’S WAR CHEST, AND THEIR DIGGING UP THE DIRT TO RUIN OTHER FRONT RUNNERS WILL EFFECT THE OUTCOME?
    Pretty much the same question, so I’ll answer both here. The Democrat primaries are going to be U-G-L-Y. There is going to be so much mud slung that no Democrat candidate will emerge untainted. The real problem I have with Hillary goes back to Monica Lewinski. Hillary had to have known that Bill was screwing around on her. Look at Gennifer Flowers. Hillary stayed with Bill when 99% of honest women would have ditched him faster than yesterday’s garbage. yet she stayed, why? I believe that it has always been Hillary that was the mastermind behind the Clinton operation. Bill has always been a sophisticated hillbilly with a skill for public oration, but it has been Hilliary with the big ideas. I see limitless abition and scheming when I see Hillary; every action has a calculation behind it. And who knows, my FBI file might have been in withthe other files discovered in the White House. I am less worried about all of the other candidates, but Hillary is a coniving, plotting, ruthless,… woman that craves power above all else.

    As for the Republicans, it truely is a wide open field. i hope that Newt runs just because he is an idea man that has a vision. My hope is that if he makes a strong showing or gets the nomination, that his ideas resonate with America and whoever is the the parties’ candidate adopts his vision and ideas. I guarantee you though, that this will bethe msot expensive election in the hsitory of the world with more influence peddled than ever before.

    If it was a Guiliani versus Richardson election, America would benefit either way. Just as a measure of my predicting ability, I have predicted every election since 1976 (yes, I was only 6 back then)

    I read your article, Bob, and I was left with two thoughts:

    1) I wrote about almost exactly the same thing when I posted about the “black-white” thinkers versus the “shades of gray” thinker a couple of months ago. I believe you dismissed me as jsut plain wrong.

    2) According to this article, I am probably the only true centrist you will ever meet. I have just as many liberal personality traits as conservative.

    I think it may be time for us to meet. I believe you will find me the true centrist I claim to be.

    I think that article has some great merit and I can certainly identify with it and have witnessed the effects of fear on people.

    I had a conversation once in Lebanon when I was in college with a family acquaintance and we were discussing the phenomenon we were observing that people tended to “follow their own kind.” This was very apparent in a multi-sectarian society that was overwhelmed with violence. He did say something that stuck with me and that was: “I do not support my own religion or group because I necessarily agree with what they say but because I know that when I am in danger from the other side they will be the ones who will protect me.” It was a matter of survival, for when the bombs are dropping from airplanes, the bombs do not care whether there are Israeli or PLO supporters in the crowd; they kill everyone in the area. Similarly, when an army protects a city from invasion, they too are not thinking who supports them and who does not among the population. It is a matter of survival.

    It is after the fear has subsided that people will voice dissent.

    I have seen much fear in the United States. I always tell people you cannot be hostage to your fears. Fear is how those in power control us.

    I have been in some tight spots and some fearful places in my life. I can assure you, the United States is not one of them. People here sometimes forget how fortunate we are. And the study is correct, most people who travel extensively (not to just one country) will tend to be more open minded because they see the similarities amidst the differences.

    I knew many Americans in Lebanon. I, of course, had a certain image of what the “average” American was like. I was “shocked” when I first came here in 1986. I realized that some Americans could be just as ignorant, intolerant, hateful, and vengeful, and just as nice and kind as any Lebanese I had the misfortune of fortune of coming across.

    I have had the fortune of making quite a number of friends in SLO. I would not forget them for the world and I would do anything for them and they would do the same for me. Many do not understand or have enough knowledge of the Middle East but by knowing me, they have become interested and are actively involved in pursuing relationships and information related to the region. In a way, through knowing me they have come to get a sense of one segment of the Middle Eastern population. Similarly, when I was in Lebanon, I got to meet wonderful American people from different professions who introduced me to one aspect of American life that I admired: humility, the willingness to help, and generosity. I miss that in SLO. But I am told that this is a SLO problem, one you do not find in bigger cities in California.

    Finally I got to watch “An Inconvenient Truth.” There must have been some good accomplished from Al Gore’s decision not to contest the results of the 2000 elections. His film and his lectures around the world are bringing people closer to putting pressure on our elected officials to reduce pollutants into the atmosphere.

    The United States is one of the few countries that have not gotten on board of the Kyoto Treaty, and has not ratified its signature, but we remain the largest emitter of CO2 gases.

    I think global change will not occur along partisan lines. It will occur through the efforts of grassroots movements as people begin to be impacted by the theft and destruction of natural resources. Already, states are bypassing the federal government’s lack of actions and implementing their own version of correcting the problem. The right/left argument is immoral in such a context; it is what is good for everyone and the future of the whole world. After all, we do share this little piece of rock called Earth and it belongs to all of us.

    I know many people came out depressed after watching the movie. I, on the other hand, am more hopeful, as the drivel propaganda of the oil industries is exposed in their attempts to “debunk” global warming.

    Why don’t you watch the film called OSAMA about a 12 year old girl that was in Afganistan. Her mother had to put her in a costume to be as a boy so she could leave her house with a male escort since she was a widow and had no son. The radical muslims are against the US that is a fact madame.     Everyone needs to calm down…Dave mentioned that he could hold his head high around the International crowd because we are getting out of our abyss…and it is true…but there is something else we need to think about as Americans when we travel abroad. We are the ambassadors of our country, so we need to do something very simple to promote a good imagine.

    We have to make a conscience effort to dress better when traveling to foreign lands (I am not talking cruise ships and the Caribbean)….there was an article in my local paper over the weekend about the images Americans give when vacationing in far away lands.

    Casual Friday has been taken way to literally when a lot of Americans, visit ancient ruins, gothic cathedrals, fine museums,
    famous landmarks, trendy neighborhoods and elegant restaurants in flip flops, running shorts, baggy T-shirts, fanny packs, black socks and sneakers…etc….

    First of all we should try to blend in, second of all…what kind of message are we sending to our overseas friends? We need to show respect…

    No one is saying you need to dress like Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, but what is wrong with Khaki pants/nice clean jeans, a collared shirt and comfortable shoes?

    We need to think twice before we pack for our next trip. Do you really want the French laughing at you while touring The Louvre?

    Thank god the new congress is finally punishing those evil oil companies. Last weeks repeal of most of thier tax breaks is a god send. Even though it will cost me a good percentage more at the pumps it is worth punishing those evil oil tycoons. I can’t wait for more of the same. Even though it costs me and my family more and more I think it is worth punishing those evil doers like the tobacco and fire arms companies. It is worth hurting a robust economy as long as people I disagree with are punished, to me at least and from what I have read on this site to you also. Finally someone that sees things the way I do.     To the “brave” anonymous commenter, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, “thanks” Congress for “punishing” those “evil” oil corporations: How much corporate socialism do you want to continue? Tax breaks for the “energy” companies when they are having record setting profits, and no investments in developing alternative energy sources, profiting of off the blood of our awesome military pursuing an ill-conceived invasion that is in reality a search for more profit for the huge corporations that donate heavily to the Republican Party; that doesn’t give you reason to pause and wonder? If Congress really wanted to put the hurt on energy producers, they could write a law that would cap the profits being made off of energy production and distribution, but too many in Congress will not bite the hand that donates so much to their campaigns, both Republicans and Democrats. Perhaps if the energy companies are so concerned about their bottom line, they might take a look at the practice of the multi-million dollar bonuses and retirement packages for their CEOs. The US needs more, smaller, decentralized energy producers like this, that could be a real boon to our overall economy, not just the shareholders and executives of the international oil monopolies.

    I so much agree. The sickening thing about what is going on in the Middle East right now is that all Arabs and Muslims are being painted with the broad brush of terrorism to the point that even children have become legitimate targets for killing because somehow some bad terrorist is “hiding” behind them. That is so wrong.

    I grew up in the civil war in Lebanon and I have come across some doozy morons out there on all sides of the conflict and they all sound like the racists whose only vocabulary consists of “kill them all,” “terrorist,” “Islamofascist,” “Islamonazi,” “go back home,” “go back to Iraq,” “go back to Lebanon,” “your Hezbollah friends,” “oreo,” “Hussein Obama,” and my favorite “BEWARE THE TERRORISTS AMONG US,” meaning me and others who look like me.

    But see, that is a sign of poor self-esteem that manifests itself through bullying those who appear “weaker” or who are too far away. BEWARE THE INTERNET COMMANDOS (heck, I am doing it now).

    They remind me of the militia men I knew in Lebanon in the 70s who would constantly brag about how many people they killed that day, but you knew they were full of hot shit because true killers do not talk about it and all you wanted to do was slap some sense into them. They were pathetic little creatures who lived meaningless and insignificant lives before the war started but they took all the glory that came with the war because of their big pompous mouths while doing nothing and while inflaming the people in their communities. They bragged about how tough they were but they were no more than cockroaches basking in the glory of those killed and those doing the actual killing.

    They were like puppies latching on to whatever macho exhibitionist obscenity that made their insignificant selves feel better. They attached themselves to all the “tough guys” in the hope that such toughness would rub off on them.

    They were the people who bought and sold others for money. They were the ones who turned their neighbors in for for every little utterance. They liked being close to the source of power. They only felt good about themselves when they put others down.

    Different time, different country, different war, same —holes.

    I would hate for you to get upset over what some “anonymous” guy/gal says on the internet. I think people who post hateful comments to other posters anonymously do not deserve our time. If people are worried about who they are when posting, they should not post.

    I stopped reading anonymous posts any more. I also stopped reading the stuff by that guy in the desert (thank God for “collapse comments”).

    I just wanted you to know that you and other decent people out there are always welcome to visit my blog and talk. I can assure you it will be a safe place to be. I am trying to encourage women and children to participate. After all, they are the ones impacted by what is going on in the world but we rarely hear their voices.

    I am trying to make the site friendly for everyone if they will give us the same courtesy. As a result, all the people in the community I know are sending me their events. You can always look there and see what is going on locally for education and fun things with the family too.

    Unfortunately, most of my friends do not know how to blog. So they do not post on blogs. But they do read it and they keep asking me to put their events on. I am also encouraging people to send me articles or their comments if they have something to say locally or internationally. As long as it is appropriate, it will go on.

    I used to have a website when I ran Women in Black, SLO. I stopped that because I found that the blog encouraged more public participation.

    I have reserved a section on the blog for the new Progressive Democratic Club in SLO and I will update it as the information is sent to me.

    If you have a link to a business, you are welcome to send it to me and I will put it there. I will also spread the word.

    Red Berka Hood walked on along the main path. But, because his status outside society had freed him from slavish adherence to linear, Western-style thought, the Wolf knew of a quicker route to Grandma’s house. He burst into the house and ate Grandma, an entirely valid course of action for a carnivore such as himself. Then, unhampered by rigid, traditionalist notions of what was masculine or feminine, he put on grandma’s nightclothes and crawled into bed.

    Red Berka Hood entered the cottage and said, “Grandma,I have brought you some fat-free, sodium-free snacks to salute you in your role of a wise and nurturing matriarch.”

    From the bed, the Wolf said softly, “Come closer, child, so that I might see you.”

    Red Berka Hood said, “Oh, I forgot you are as optically challenged as a bat. Grandma, what big eyes you have!”

    “They have seen much, and forgiven much, my dear.”
    “Grandma, what a big nose you have — only relatively, of
    course, and certainly attractive in its own way.”

    “It has smelled much, and forgiven much, my dear.”

    “Grandma, what big teeth you have!”

    The Wolf said, “I am happy with and what I am,” and leaped out of bed. He grabbed Red Berka Hood in his claws, intent on devouring her. Red Berka Hood screamed, not out of alarm at the Wolf’s apparent tendency toward cross-dressing, but because of his willful invasion of her personal space.

    Her screams were heard by a passing woodchopper
    (or log-fuel technician, as he preferred to be called). When he
    burst into the cottage, he saw the melee and tried to intervene.
    But as he raised his ax, Red Berka and the Wolf both stopped.

    “And what do you think you’re doing?” asked Red Berka
    Hood. The woodchopper-person blinked and tried to answer, but
    no words came to him.

    “Bursting in here like a Neanderthal, trusting your
    weapon to do your thinking for you!” she said. “Sexist!Speciesist! How dare you assume that womyn and wolves can’t solve their own problems without a man’s help!”

    When she heard Red Berka Hood’s speech, Grandma jumped out of the mouth, took the woodchopper-person’s axe, and cut his head off. After this ordeal, Red Berka Hood, Grandma, and the Wolf felt a certain commonality of purpose. They decided to set up an alternative household based on mutual respect and cooperation,
    and they lived together in the woods happily ever after.

    Are you guys noticing how many people who are working for small businesses in San Luis County are losing their health insurance because their employers cannot afford to subsidize it any more?

    Have you also noticed how the doctors and dentists are asking for money up front (before they bill the insurance companies) because the insurance companies are defaulting on payments they promised, claiming they did not promise to pay or they do not have to pay. Guess who will have to make up the difference when insurance companies don’t pay.

    We’re damned if we have insurance (it costs an arm and a leg) and we’re damned if we didn’t.

    And it will only get worse.

    Maybe if George Bush talked more about such issues in his speeches, people like McCain would not be bored to oblivion.

    chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and he served on the boards of

    olis, he graduated from Princeton University and received a law degree from
    the University of Virginia.
    He worked in Buffalo before moving to Washington in 1979. He was a special-

    Satellite Corp., a telecommunications development company in Washington, and

    , a paging and voice messaging company. It’s main subsidiary in Washington is

    < <+1>> July 21, 1993 (UPI): Vincent Foster, A top legal aide to President
    Clinton was announced to have “committed suicide in a park outside Washington,”
    by the White House.

    In a statement, White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers said Vince
    Foster Jr., 48, the White House deputy counsel, was found dead in a suburban
    Virginia park, apparently killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Foster,
    originally from Hope, Ark., like Clinton, had come to Washington from the law
    firm of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

    No note was found near the body, which was discovered by local authorities
    in Fort Marcy Park, near Fairfax, Va., officials said, nor was any possible
    reason Foster might have taken his life put forward.
    Foster most recently was involved in the administration’s so-called
    Travelgate scandal, involving the abrupt firing of seven longtime employees
    from the White House travel office and the hiring of a distant cousin of
    Clinton’s.

    An internal investigation by White House chief of staff Thomas Mclarty docum-
    ented Foster’s involvement in the process, which included contacts with the
    first lady on the subject of possible crime and wrongdoing. But Foster was not
    among the four White House staffers reprimanded for their roles in the
    dismissals.

    Foster was among those responsible for initiating a private audit,

    Foster was Purportedly speaking with an Editor at a Washington newspaper
    prior to his death. He was found shot in the back of the head with a 1913
    Colt .38 revolver which he did not own. The revolver had no serial number,
    even though all Colt revolvers since the late 1800’s have had serial numbers
    except a special series issued to the CIA. Foster advised the Clinton’s on
    their finances. There are presently at least two bank scandals that are
    emerging from Little Rock Arkansas, involving banks in which the Clintons have
    an interest.

    < <+1>> June 22, 1993, the partially decomposed body of Paul Wilcher, a
    49 year old investigative lawyer was found on a toilet in his Capitol Hill
    apartment in Washington, D.C. At the time of his death, he was investigating
    the “October Surprise” conspiracy during the 1980 federal election campaign.
    He had been interviewing an inmate who claimed to have piloted George Bush to
    Paris so he could secretly seek to delay the release of 52 American hostages
    in Iran.

    Not mentioned in this article are other facts. Prior to his death, Wilcher
    had recently spoken with John Parsons, a producer of syndicated television
    programs, about making a documentary of his findings. He had also spoken
    with John Vassillos, the attorney for CIA operative Mike Riconosciuto.
    Riconosciuto claims he was involved in a web of underworld, CIA, and Depart-
    ment of Justice dealings, revealed in allegations brought by a computer
    company called Inslaw Inc., that the Justice Department had stolen its
    software product, “Promis, ” then driven the firm into bankruptcy and that
    the program had been sold to countries all over the world by persons afilliat-
    ed with then attorney-general Ed Meese.

    Riconosciuto says that the program was provided to Wackenhut Corp. of
    Coral Gables, FL, and that Wackenhut hired 50 of the world’s top programmers
    to modify the code of the software at the Southern California Cabazon Indian
    reservation. Riconosciuto also has detailed his involvement in gun running
    and drug dealing conducted out of Mena, Arkansas. Danny Caselero, 44, a
    reporter who was investigating the Inslaw scandal and had spoken with
    Riconosciuto, was found murdered in a hotel bathtub in Washington, D.C. in
    1931, the day after telling friends and family that he was about to receive
    material that would provide him with documentation linking Inslaw to October
    Surprise and the Iran-Contra scandals. Paul Wilcher was also investigating
    these same links, as well as their connection to the deaths of the ATF
    agents and Branch Davidians at Mt. Carmel at the time of his own death.

    THE USS DEATHSHIP (A/K/A USS ROOSEVELT):

    Both the Carrier Roosevelt and the 1st Armored Division figures prominently
    in a “Nato Peacekeeping Plan” for Serbia/Bosnia. Both also figure prominently
    in three separate crashes, killing more than a dozen people associated with
    Clinton [Reported in “All Plans Include Key Navy Role Virginian-Pilot” (Norfolk
    , VA) (VP) – Saturday, May 9, 1993, By: Phyllis W. Jordan,
    Edition: FINAL Section: FRONT Page: A8.] And interestingly, the commanders of
    both the Roosevelt and the 1st Armored Division either died or were replaced
    in late February or early March, 1993, ar did personnel involved in escorting
    or guarding Clinton on the Carrier Roosevelt:

    < <+4>> February 23, 1993: Maj. Gen. Jarrett J. Robemon, 52, the deputy comm-
    anding general of V Corps, died when an Army UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crashed
    as it attempted to land at Wiesbaden air base February 23, 1993. V Corps is
    an armored force headquartered in nearby Frankfurt, and is the U.S. Army’s
    chief combat component in Europe which currently has troops in Somalia and a
    medical unit in Croatia. Also killed were Col. William J. Densbeger, 47, the
    corps’ chief of operations and plans; Col. Robert J. Kelly, 49, its chief of
    intelligence; and Spec. Gary L. Rhodes, 23, the helicopter crew chief. The
    officers were returning from a meeting at the U.S. European Command
    headquarters in Stuttgart when their Blackhawk fell suddenly to the ground not
    far from the Wiesbaden air base’s control tower and burst into flames.

    And we now have the entire U.S. 1st Armored Division, in this same
    European Command, under the direct control of a German general.

    On March 2, 1993, Rear Adm. L.E. Allen Jr. relieved Rear Adm. Frederick L.
    Lewis as commanding officer of Carrier Group 4 and Commander Carrier Striking
    Force on March 2, 1993, in Norfolk, Va. (which includes the USS Roosevelt).
    Allen was formerly stationed in Washington, D.C., where he served as deputy
    director for operations on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Lewis was reassigned to
    a land job as commander of Naval Doctrine Command, which later
    became operational on March 12. {Reported in “COMMAND CHANGES.” VIRGINIAN-
    PILOT (Norfolk, VA) (VP) – Tuesday, March 2, 1993, Edition: FINAL Section:
    LOCAL Page: D4.}

    < <5>> March 25, 1993 : Five Navy aviators were lost at sea at 7 p.m.,
    Thursday, March 25, 1993, when their E-2C Hawkeye early warning plane crashed
    into the sea while attempting to return to the aircraft Roosevelt, Navy
    officials said yesterday. Hours earlier, the Roosevelt had arrived in the
    Ionian Sea on a six-month European deployment. The carrier’s air wing had
    just completed its first operational mission, flying night combat air patrol
    off the Yugoslav coast, while Germany-based U.S. cargo planes dropped food to
    besieged muslims in Bosnia. [Reported in “Five Navy Fliers Lost at Sea, ” The

    These five men had been escorts for President Clinton when he visited the
    Carrier Roosevelt.

    < <+4>> May 19, 1993: On May 21, 1993, the Marine Corps grounded its entire
    presidential fleet of nine VH-60N helicopters pending the outcome of the inve-
    stigation of a crash involving one of the presidential fleet helicopters, a VH
    -60N Blackhawk helicopter that went down in a heavily wooded area near the
    Potomac River about 31 miles southeast of Washington on May 19, 1993. Killed
    in the crash were Maj. William S. Barkley, Jr., Staff Sgt. Brian D. Haney,
    and Sgt. Timothy D. Sabel, and Capt. Scott J. Reynolds.

    Maj. Barkley, 27, of Hickory, N.C. became a naval aviator in 1977 and
    was assigned to the presidential squadron in January 1990. He was one of only
    eight pilots in the squadron authorized to fly the President, according to
    Betty Jo Bragg, longtime secretary to Barkley’s father.

    Sgt.. Timothy D. Sabel, 27, of Ripon, Wis., was “responsible for the
    maintenance of the airplane. He goes on all flights, “said Master Sgt. Paul
    Earle, a Marine spokesman at Quantico, Virginia (which is also FBI head-
    quarters).

    Staff Sgt. Brian D. Haney, 32, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, was the quality
    assurance representative on the helicopter. Carolyn Haney, his mother, said
    her son had flown with President George Bush to Europe and in the presid-
    ential campaign “all over the United States.”

    Capt. Scott J. Reynolds, 33, of Wausau, Wis., joined the Marines in 1984,
    was designated a naval aviator in 1987 and was a veteran of the Persian Gulf
    War

    Clinton had flown once on that particular craft, according to White House
    spokeswoman Dee Dee Myers. That flight took the president to the aircraft
    carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt off the Virginia coast in March, she said.

    More Bodyguards:

    Texas, four agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were killed.
    Those killed in the attack were : Steve Willis, 32, of Houston; Robert J.
    Williams, 26, Little Rock, Ark.; Conway LeBleu, 30, New Orleans; and Todd
    McKeehan, 28, New Orleans. {Reported in “UPDATE: AT LEAST FIVE DEAD, l5

    President Clinton himself revealed that these men had been his bodyguards
    in a speech on March 18, 1993, before employees of the Treasury Department:

    “My prayers and I’m sure yours are still with the families of all four
    of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents who were killed in Waco —
    Todd McKeehan and Conway Lebleu of New Orleans, Steve Willis of Houston, and
    Robert Williams from my hometown of Little Rock. Three of those four were
    assigned to my security during the course of the primary or general
    election.” {Remarks by the President to employees of the Treasury
    Department, March 18, 1993, 11:48 A.M. EST}

    21 – Total confirmed deaths of persons connected to Clinton in the past year.
    (I have not included people who were also killed in the crashes with whom
    there is no confirmed Link at this time, such as the three persons who were
    killed in the same crash as Vincent Raiser and his son). All of these people
    died of unnatural causes. Four were shot, 17 were killed in crashes of helic-
    opters or airplanes.

    The statistical probabilities of Clinton knowing 21 people, all of whom
    died either in accidents or under mysterious circumstances in less than a
    year’s time, is virtually zero.

    And Where Do These Guys Fit In:

    was brought in from Ft. Hood, Texas and used to set the fire at Mt. Carmel,
    in Waco, Texas on April 19, 1993?

    July 21, 1993, (AP): Three Texas National Guardsmen, reportedly mistaken
    for pop-up targets, were shot to death by fellow soldiers Wednesday during a
    night vision training exercise.

    “They were hit by fire from other soldiers,” said Lt. Col. Ed Komandoshy,
    a spokesman at Guard headquarters in Austin. Komandoshy said the victims were
    members of the 3rd Battalion, l41st Infantry of the Texas National Guard in
    McAllen, had experience in the training exercise and “had been in the Guard
    for some time.”

    Killed were Spc. Daniel F. Benitez, 27, of Donna; Spc. Jose C. Ramos Jr.,
    42, of Weslaco; and Sgt. Raul Cardenas, 27, of Weslaco were pronounced dead
    at Darnall Army Community Hospital in Killeen.

    found dead from a supposed suicide. His wife had already left for work and
    he was found in his underwear, hanging in his basement, later in the moming

    that those who know too much or those who interfere with the one world

    Rich: Please read my comment again; do you see anywhere where I said that vote tampering actually affected the vote outcome? What I was commenting on was how the Republican Party willingly engages in vote tampering and voter intimidation. I know that Democrats have engaged in both vote tampering and voter intimidation in the past, but I am more concerned about now. Let’s put this into nonpartisan terms; vote tampering and voter intimidation is wrong, no matter who does it. The Republicans have been guilty of both most recently, but to say that what has been done is an equalization of what happened in the past is a justification that does not equal out. It would be a great leap forward for our democracy to remove the “politics” of voting; yeah, I know, that sounds very oxmoronish, but to have elections that simply allow all eligible citizens to cast their vote and have that vote counted as it was intended would allow the true will of the people to be expressed.
    Getting back to an earlier comment you had Rich, I do think you are more of a centrist than probably most anyone else who has mostly right ward leaning viewpoints. Most here will probably spit out their coffee reading this, but I too think of myself of “somewhat” of a centrist; government should be efficient and streamlined, taxes on the lower income strata should be minimal, middle class earners should not be paying the bulk of taxes, family farmers should be able to pay their bills and mega corporations should not qualify for unending subsidies and tax breaks, they should pay their fair share. Our military should be strong, but do we really need to outspend the next 20 countries after us combined? Rich, you mentioned that maybe we should meet sometime; I’m game, I will contact you via email through your website after I return from my trip this weekend through Tuesday next week.     Hello Mr. Dogma,

    I so much enjoyed the web page of “Baghdad Bob;” I have been wondering where he’s been the past few years. The last image I have of him is in Baghdad while the city behind him is burning and him saying: “Americans, what Americans?” I felt kinda sorry for him there. He reminded me of the “lone ranger,” with no President and no Republican Guard; they all split and he was left there all by himself as a spokesperson for his country; a propaganda entrepreneur, sort of in a “hero’s wishful and delusional last stand.”

    It must be the desert. It does something to the brain (and other body parts), probably due to dehydration of more than one kind. I see you picked up on the parallels.

    I think humor is important in politics and other areas of life. That is how most of us coped in the old country (and here too). You also learn a lot about the culture and politics of the countries. Some people are just too uptight, especially the intolerant because they cannot see the ironies in life and they are not able to empathize with everyone and satirize everything. Too bad.

    I am sharing a small piece of satire from a Lebanese blog. It is how that Arabs make fun of themselves. I will include the link, but many of the posts are in Arabic (and they are hilarious).     Why is it that when the criminal behavior of this administration is discussed, the Bush apologists come out beating the drums of war against presidents past? Does that really help understand the current problems and does it excuse what this administration is doing?

    If Clinton was a cheat and had sex with a bimbo in the White House while he was president, does that make bush less criminal with his CURRENT behavior? No one excused the lies of Clinton. His wife’s questionable corporate connections are more worrisome too. But Bush has far outdone the both of them and all the presidents that came before them combined.

    Clinton could not keep it in his pants and he lied about it. Bush cannot stay sober and he lied to the whole world and cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of people (Clinton is no angel in that respect either. It was during his regime that the sanctions against Iraq inflicted the most damage on the civilian population in general where children with cancer could not obtain chemotherapeutic agents because they were banned under the terms of the sanctions).

    However, on a humanity and intelligence scale, I would take Clinton any day over the idiot we have in the White House now. At least Clinton had brains, “some” compassion and a little bit of class. This president is a world embarrassment; a modern day Nero who watches as countries fall around him and laughs about it.

    JerryD: Do you remember when you where on Dave’s show last time and I called in? I complemented you for your intelligence, and generally tried to be nice to you; I guess that when you are on the phone to San Luis Obispo some of the mentally healthy “air” of San Luis county somehow seeps through the phone to you and you sound reasonable and articulate. Perhaps it is just that you have to say what you are thinking and don’t have time to mull over a thought to have it come out in your speaking like the general pettiness and nastiness that comes through your comments here.
    I don’t know any deeply conservative people very well so I only have my experience that I have had here reading and commenting with you or other conservative commentators, but it seems as though irony is a concept that is totally lost on most conservatives, or at least you personally, Jerry. You like to spout off that liberals are “hate mongers”, that all we have is hate, yet you continue to comment here in all caps, which, in the on-line community has always indicated “yelling”, and yelling usually is a means of communicating that you are angry, which is an expression of “hate”. You just don’t seem to get it, which is why I say that irony is lost on you.

    Jerry, did you follow the link I left here earlier that went to an article on the psychology of what makes the difference between conservatives and liberals? In the study the researchers asked kindergarden teachers to rate students temperaments, not anything about politics or anything else. …Twenty years later, they decided to compare the subjects’ childhood personalities with their political preferences as adults. They found arresting patterns. As kids, liberals had developed close relationships with peers and were rated by their teachers as self-reliant, energetic, impulsive, and resilient. People who were conservative at age 23 had been described by their teachers as easily victimized, easily offended, indecisive, fearful, rigid, inhibited, and vulnerable at age 3. The reason for the difference, the Blocks hypothesized, was that insecure kids most needed the reassurance of tradition and authority, and they found it in conservative politics.
    I have read many times elsewhere that most conservatives, in wanting that strong authority figure, are looking (subconsciously, at least) for a “father” figure to protect them and to keep order in their lives. Please don’t misunderstand me here; I am not making fun of conservatives, either in their beliefs or potential reasons for believing as they do, my point here is again to point out how the concept of irony seems to lost on most conservatives and especially you, Jerry.
    I assume that you will continue to call liberals “spineless” and “hate-filled” as you lash out at those who don’t think like you do, but I think you are projecting what it is about yourself that you don’t like out there on those like myself that prefer to think for ourselves and not be cowed by those who don’t support every single word President Bush says as being unpatriotic or somehow supporting “the enemies of America”.
    And Jerry the reason I miss Dave not posting here is so he can post for a new topic. If you really want to think about something Jerry, please read any reports you can find on “Scooter” Libby’s trial; things are not looking good for this administration.

    You know, I’ve always noticed that conservaties who are dogmatic in their strict interpretation of the constitution also tend to be strict dogmatists in their religious beliefs.

    Bob,

    Rigid personalities do not really understand the reasons behind their actions or the actions of others. They usually hold a certain belief system that is not based on justice but on what a “higher” authority says, even though that authority may be tyrannical. That is due to the fact that they have not learned to think for themselves and to the fear that has been ingrained in them. That is why they are attracted to powerful people; because of the erroneous belief that such power will protect them. What they fail to realize is that people in power are there for themselves only in most instances and we are all expendable to them. Fear is the first step towards intolerance.

    However, that authority they admired is not tolerated when it comes to their own lives. For example: there are those who believe that the government is too much in our lives; they do not want to pay taxes; they do not want public education; they resent civil service employees; they do not want to provide assistance to the poor. At the same time, they do not mind the spread of the military culture in society (one of the largest civil service sectors in our society and one that is financed by our taxes); they do not mind the government arresting innocent people (as long as it does not apply to them and as long as they can keep THEIR guns and tanks); they do not mind excusing the blatant dishonesty of the multinational corporations (another Big brother).

    What they seem to fail to realize is that society cannot function without government and without a community based on just principles.

    I used to live in a place where the national government was absent during the war. In the absence of government somone has to step in and take charge of the street cleaning, the schools, the repairs, and the defending. So, guess what, the same militias and right wing ideologues who resented government financing of projects for the poor started imposing exorbitant taxes on the people in their sectors and started demanding that at least one male of military age be conscripted into the militias. Those who refused were terrorized, murdered, or were forced to smuggle their young male sons out of the country since the kids did not want to fight for a cause they did not believe in; they did not want to fight, period.

    What some fail to realize is that government, whether federal, state, or local will try to impose its will on everyone. The challenge is that the citizens remain vigilant to its potential abuses.

    Someone still has to pay for the wars we are waging, the schools we send out children to and the maintenance of our neighborhood and it will have to be every single one of us with our own taxes.

    The problem with rigid people is they cannot understand the dialectic relationships in the world and they memorize cliches and slogans without really understanding their implications.

    SUPPORT THE TROOPS AND KILL THE IRANIANS AND HEZBOLLAH is what they think and talk about but they do not want to pay taxes and they resent the same people who work for the government that are supposed to do the killing on their behalf or treat the wounded soldiers who come back home. After all, the military does hire doctors and nurses to treat the people they are cheering on to war.

    There is a term for that where I work: it is called schizophrenia.

    How very sad that another leading Democrat is a racist. I just wish we could get over this racial divide in our country. We have a former leader of the KKK, Robert Bird, in the senate. We have Biden calling Mr. Borac Hussein Obama the first articulate clean good looking black man to run for president. Hillary is out to take out Obama by doing research to use against Obama because of his muslim background. Mow she is furious it was leaked too early to help her out.

    Marilyn: A lot has been written about the “need” of those of the ultra conservative mindset have of an absolute authority that only defines in black and white decisions, and I have written before here on Dave’s blog about that to some degree. My focus this time was solely on Jerry Dagna and his continuing need to verbally abuse those who don’t think in lockstep with him, and how it is so ironic that he calls liberals “haters” when it appears to me that it is an example of the pot calling the kettle black (no racial implications intended).

    New Tone: You obviously were listening to Hannity today, and I’m sure Rush touched on Senator Biden’s comments as well. Senator Biden’s comments were over the line when he used the word “clean” as part of his describing Senator Barack Obama appeal. Senator Obama is a handsome, clean cut man who is intelligent and articulate.
    The media personalities of the right who keep perpetuating the mistake that the Clinton for President campaign is the “source” of the information supposedly supplied to The New Republic are only illustrating how desperate the right is to smear the candidates of the left. Senator Clinton, her staff and her campaign have absolutely nothing to do with the attempted smearing of Senator Obama with the false charge that he attended a madrassa when he lived in Africa. Others have mentioned Dick Morris as a “credible” source of information concerning the Clinton campaign, supposedly because he was an adviser to Bill Clinton while he was President; Dick Morris is a hack who has sold his soul so that he could enrich himself as a commentator on Fox News or where ever else he could get some “face time” on the tube.
    Your mentioning Senator Byrd as a former member of the KKK is that; a mention of his former membership in that “organization” of hate; Senator Byrd has repudiated his one-time being a member and has apologized. Because he was a racist at one time does not make him a racist for all time, unless he continues with his behavior and thinking that he had back then, which he has not. Another example of projection by the right; when you are guilty of some distasteful behavior, those who don’t think like you must be guilty of the same behavior as well. Very twisted logic, but at least you are consistent.

    Bob, I am deeply conservative but not ultra conservative. For the record, my father was always around when I was growing up and we have a great relationship; I consider him one of my best friends. I am NOT conservative because I lack that “authority figure” as you so quaintly put it. The truth is that none of you liberals really know what makes conservatives tick any more than us conservative have any clue what is going on in your brains to think the way you do.

    For me, being a conservative means that you trust people to do the right thing for the greater good while seeing to their own self-interest. I am a follower of Adam Smith’s “invisible hand”. That means I believe in market forces, in supply and demand, in individual freedom to make the right calls for themselves with the understanding that the individual is responsible for that choice. I believe that with every law passed is one less freedom we have. You all do realize that most laws are self-serving and are gernally contradictory to some other law already on the books? Conservatism believes that the Constitution is greatest document written by mankind and needs to be respected as such. That is why Justice Breyer’s penchant for going to foreign law to justify his perversions of the Constitution is such an anathema to us conservatives. Our respect for the Constitution is also what fuels our dislike for Big Government. At this point I would like to point out that President Bush, while a republican, is NOT a Conservative in either word or deed; he is something else entirely. Can you all name the least invoked amendment to the Constitution? It is the 10th Amendment, which states: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved for the States respectively, or to the people.” Almost every department in the government, outside of the Department of Defense and the Post Office, were created out of whole cloth and not found anywhere in the Constitution. I know, I know, water under the bridge, and I agree, but how much more government do we need. Neither radical Islam nor China nor Global Warming (crap) will destroy America, but our dependancy on feckless bureaucracies will.

    Liberals, on the other hand, do not trust the individual to do the right thing, period. That to me explains the pathological need liberals have for grand conspiracy theories. It explains the hatred of “Big Tobacco”, “Big Oil”, “Big Pharma”, “Big Box Stores”, and coming soon, “Big Ag” what with the price inflation that will hit the grain industry as ethanol production starts going full tilt. Liberals feel helpless against the “big whatever” so they counter that with “Big Government”. Liberals fight their phantom conspirators with laws, rules and regulations because liberals are incapable of trusting people or things to work themselves out. Liberals think they know what right is on so many issues and they are not afraid to legislate those feelings into law. The ridiculous light bulb bill, with a title so ridiculous I refuse to type the words, for instance, is another case where some smarter-than-thou legislator thinks that he has the answer for “global warming” but legislating his beliefs into law. Can anyone tell me how much CO2 the earth’s atmosphere can really absorb? Of course you can’t; know one can. But when you through out useless pie charts and graphs showing what has happened in the last 30 years and say that the human civilization is doomed, that makes you foolish and arrogant. But to try to legislate those beliefs into law, that makes you dangerous.

    Bottom line (cuz i have to go): Conservatives trust basic human instincts, distrust big government; Liberals distrust human instincts, trust laws and Big Government. There you have it in a nutshell.

Oh and by the way, the whole point of the Biden criticism is that when you point out a positive trait in a racial group it means you are saying you don’t normally see that trait in all of the racial group, which makes it noteworthy.     Bob in San Luis, you really ought to pay closer attention to the Libby trial because Fitz-Niphong’s case is a house of cards and the defense is pulling them out, one by one. Judith Miller stated in court yesterday that she can’t remember if Libby was absolutely positively the only person she talked to about Plame. But of course, this will all be lost on you because none of you liberals acknowledge that Fitz-Niphong actually said that no crime was committed with regard to who first spoke Valerie’s name aloud to the media.

Scooter Libby discussing with Dick Cheney about “outing” Joe Wilson’s wife as a covert CIA agent two days before the traitor Robert Novak prints Valerie Plame’s name in the paper, and you think the case is “unwinding”? I say it is just starting to get interesting, and Vice-President Cheney may either perjure himself under oath or be forced to resign because he has to admit under oath that he made the decision to endanger a covert CIA operation by exposing the identity of an undercover agent for political gain! Probably the only people who work in the Whitehouse that are more concerned about this than Dick Cheney is would be his lawyers, and maybe President Bush’s lawyers also.

    Bob, What is the hell are you talking about? Within the last few years, recently, The esteemed Bird said that there are “white niggers” as well as others people that act like “niggers”. I am using his words I think on Larry King Live if I am correct. You have a different standard when you think Trent Lott should be removed for joking with a 100 year old former senator (Marshal I think) and think it is not a big problem when Biden or Bird step on themselves all of the time.

Purposefully misspelling names of national recognized figures is completely juvenile, as is your utter fascination with the whole Clinton-Lewinski affair. One of the traits I admire about how Rich from Paso is how he usually avoids stooping to your level of immaturity.

    Rich: Getting back to your thoughtful discourse on conservative vs. liberal; I mentioned the “authority” figure need that the ultraconservatives have, not those who are not of the ultraconservative mindset. I am glad that you had and continue to have a good relationship with your father. My suspicion is that most of the ultraconservatives either had an antagonistic relationship with their fathers, or there was no relationship at all. Subconsciously most of the ultraconservatives need that strong authority figure, not just to “protect” them, but to keep them in line, to not do “bad” things, and to reinforce their ideals that they are somehow superior to those who don’t think like they do. This mindset allows bigotry, racism and the militarization of Christianity that silently accepts the actions of those who bomb abortion clinics and assassinate doctors who have performed abortions. The danger to our society is when our political leaders bend to the will of a small percentage of our population that think like this and try to enact laws that curtail our liberties and restrict our rights.

    To all who think that the Scooter Libby trial is not of importance: Believe anything Rush or Sean spews out concerning this trial if you wish, but they are not telling the truth. The far right wants this trial to be meaningless, but wishing don’t make it so. The evidence being uncovered at this trial could very well be the start of a groundswell of investigations into the actions and legalities of this administrations actions since the day they came into office. Serious investigations take time and before any announcements of legal actions are made, the evidence supporting that action has to be rock solid. This whole “outing” of a true undercover agent (no matter what the right says) has the potential to be a bigger matter than any-other administration has ever faced, including that of Richard Nixon.

    Bob, you are making a leap of logic that doesn’t hold up. Allow me to explain. When I state that liberals make everything about them, I am referring to all of the ills that liberals see about society and how it affects the liberal personally. Conversely, conservatives do see a bigger picture of things, but as they go about living their lives, the conservative seeks the best for their family, seeks the best, fair price for goods and services, etc etc. That’s the kind of “selfishness” I was referring to. Liberals are all pissed off about Bush and Iraq, even though they are not in the fight at all personally, because Bush angers and annoys them. That is the selfishness of liberals I was referring to. I hope this clears up what you perceived as a contradiction where none exists.

    Rich: Again, you make a good point, your heart is in the right place, but I still disagree with you. Historically, Liberalism has always been about the greater good, for all. Conversely, Conservatism has had a history of pushing for a concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a select few. I do understand that those of a moderate conservative view do strive to be true to their ideals by electing leaders who supposedly share their ideals and values. The problem arises from electing politicians who misrepresent themselves solely to get elected and then do only what they want to do, not what they promised to do. Yes, political leaders on the left do the exact same thing, and we on the left don’t get exactly what we thought we were getting either. In addition to some of the suggestions that you have put forth concerning election reform and campaign financing, I for one would really like to see an abandonment of political parties completely and we elect individuals on the merit of platform. If the financing were changed, perhaps the politicians would be forced to be more responsive to those who elect them, not those who finance them as is done now.

    New Tone: Yes, there is a double standard: Any time a Democrat says anything that remotely is wrong by today’s politically correct standards, everyone on the right will jump up and down screaming about how bad and evil it is that this person (Democrat) that has said this bad thing.
    Conversely, a Republican says that “bad” thing; the press jumps on it, the left points out how bad the thing is and yet, among his constituency, the Republican’s favorable ratings go up!
    Yes, politicians do put their proverbial foot in their mouth and say things that they either shouldn’t have said at all, or they say things in a manner that was not acceptable. I researched your mention of Senator Byrd’s quote (which I do not care to repeat) and found a mention of the quote. Yes, Senator Byrd did say that, and then he immediately stopped and stated that he did not want to talk about it any further, mentioning that he did feel comfortable talking like that. As for Senator Joseph Biden and his mention of Senator Obama being “clean”; listening to the Randi Rhodes Show today on AAR, she offered her interpretation of Senator Biden’s remark: “Senator Biden was saying, none too elegantly, that Senator Barack Obama is a black politician that white voters can feel comfortable voting for.” I think perhaps that Randi is correct.

    Bob: I think that is your interpretation of what has “historically” been the case. Conservatives don’t push wealth into the hands of a few, we just don’t cry like babies when wsomeone else is successful and try to steal their money through taxation in the name of “fairness”. Liberals are in favor of helping the common good, that’s true. However, liberals try to help the common good with governmental programs, laws and regulations. I know that all you liberals are just deficating yourselves over the fact that Exxon-Mobile made more profits than any other company in the history of the world, but I happen to think that it is great. It’s exactly what our free enterprise capitalist systems says will happen when supply and demand get out of whack, which is not necessarily a bad thing. If you believe anything different, you well on your way to becoming a Marxist-Socialist like Hugo “The Yugo” Chavez.

    On a differnet topic: I don’t believe that we will ever be a party-free country. Political parties were there seconds after our Constitution was ratified and are as American as apple pie. However, if the amendment necessary to approve the public financing only plan of mine passed,. the political parties power would be seriously denuded (look it up).

    I think that all politicians are lying to someone to get elected. Democrats in this last election were lying to America that they were more to the center than they are governing. Bush lied to Conservatives that he was one of them. Of course, Clinton lied that he didn’t have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky, and Hillary lied that there was a “vast right-wing conspiracy” behind it. The political parties are choosing for us who we get to vote for. Under my plan, anyone with some good ideas, the ability to communicate and soem charisma could get elected to puclic office. What I think has been lacking these past few decades is we have too many politicans that are self-serving rather than good, old fashioned “public servants”. A friend of mine said recently that the politicans in Washington should each ask themselves “What have I done to make America better today?” If they can’t answer the question, they stay at work until they do.

    Yes Rich, the neo-conservatives are not pushing wealth into the hands of a select few, they are channeling and earmarking, as well as enriching through the many-times-mentioned-by-me no-bid contracts.

    Exxon: How many tax breaks are they currently getting while posting those record profits? How much are they investing into research on alternative fuels and energy sources? How much have they paid in fines for polluting in the processing and transportation?
    I posted a link earlier in this thread about BioWillie, a development that Willie Nelson has invested in that processes agriculture crops into a biofuel. His concept is a series of small, local plants that don’t have to transport the crops over long distances and is then distributed locally. Small de-centralized fuel processing that if developed nation wide could make a serious dent in our dependancy on foreign oil. And they don’t make huge sums of profit, thus keeping the fuel costs lower for the local needs.

    As for Exxon: Yeah, probably a good time to repeal some tax breaks they no longer need…and they can invest in alternative fuels as much as they and their shareholders want. It’s called Captialism in a free country. Right now, all of the alternative fuel options are either impractable or too small to make even the smallest dent in our need for petroleum. Face it, Bob, teh gasoline powered internal combustion engine is here to stay for a long while

    Rich: You are right, if I inferred that only Republicans earmark and pork barrel spend, that would have been an insult. Over our country’s history, all political parties that have been in power have manipulated spending to benefit their selves and/or their cronies; in the last fifty years or so, the Democrats certainly held their own, but for the last ten years or so, the Republicans elevated pork barrel spending and earmarks to an art-form. The infamous “K” street project headed or directed by former Congressman Tom Delay from Texas, followed a ruthless program that instilled an iron handed approach of making sure that every single lobbyist was registered as a Republican. If you were a Democrat and a lobbyist, you didn’t work in Washington during Tom Delay’s reign of terror. There is still a palpable taint of corruption and glad handing in Washington, no matter which party is in charge of Congress or the White House, and until the method of campaign financing can be changed, not much is going to be different.
    As for alternative fuels, alternative propulsion methods, and alternative methods of moving goods and people, the idea of an “Apollo” type of energy program with a focus on producing a means of our country moving away from dependence on foreign energy suppliers. Rich, you have proposed on your blog a new light rail service; add that to a move towards producing more vehicles with hybrid technology, but power those vehicles with diesel engines that run on biofuels, stretching the mpg to upwards of 60, 70 even 100 miles to the gallon.
    You mentioned how Exxon made their (obscene) profits because of not just the stupid tax breaks that need to rescinded but more because they only invest in research as they see fit in order to maximize their profits; that is exactly what an “Apollo” type energy policy would address. Penalizing companies that do not invest in alternative fuel research, awarding tax breaks to the companies that actually bring new technology and new types of fuel to market would give the big companies most of the incentive they would need. A purely free market system unfairly rewards those who have inside information and can grease the wheels of government so they benefit from lucrative contracts, are free to buy up all competition allowing them to end up as monopoly that is supposed to be against the law.

    jt: You’re right about one thing; your often repeated description is certainly oversimplified, but it is not accurate. Ronald Reagan made the famous quote: “What are the nine most feared words in America? ‘ I’m from the government and I’m here to help’.” – I wonder how many people that were caught in hurricane Katrina and died would have given anything to hear those words? Government can only be as good as the people who run it, and they answer to those who we have elected. The first thing that needs to be changed is how we elect those in office so that they answer to us, not those who have the most money. When that is accomplished, we can make government truly answerable to us, and if we don’t like what they are doing for us, we can change it. Government is supposed to be “…in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity…“; that, of course, is from our Constitution. Please note that this is a direct quote and that every single item except defense is Capitalized, including Welfare. Chew on that for awhile, all of you conservatives.

    Bob, you’re right that DeLay had a vicious lobbying program, but you know what? I say to the victor goes the spoils. he and the Republicans earned the right to institute their “reign of terror” as you hysterically put it. The Democrats are as we speak paying lip-service to “bipartisanship” as Republican House members are not allowed to submit any amendments and are shouted down by Barney Frank from the dias. Again, to the victor goes the spoils and if Republicans are upsaet by that, vote Republican becasue elections have consequences.

    I still think that your view of capitalism is warped by your conspiracy mindset; that everything is done with collusion and insider trading. A safe bet in the stock market is always oil and tobacco,, becasue people feel that they can’t live without either.

    I think that there are soem good points between Jerry and Bob. I agree that there should be a publically funded “Apollo” prioject at the 10,000 public universities around the country to develop alternative fuels propulsions systems. There has been no change to the internal combustion engine since the start of the 20th century. At the same time, Jerry is right that we do need a short term push for domestic oil supplies to cover the gap between development of a new fuel or engine system and the conversion away from a petrochemical driven economy. Jerry is also right that the terrorists are connected directly to the US economy through the symbiosis that exists between the Arab world and the Western world. All you liberals rail against the money “wasted” in the Middle East, but until we sever the economic ties to that region, we will be there to ensure that this great economy of ours keeps rolling. Everything you value in your standard of living is directly tied to the Middle East. The roads you drive on, the computer you type on, the phone you use to call into Dave’s show on, the refrigerator that keeps your food eddible, on and on and on, is tied to our desparate need for oil. We produce enough oil domestically to cover the other uses for oil; we don’t for the transportation needs of this country. I have misgivings about artificially manipulating prices either up or down to suit some politically desired effect. That is always a prescription for disaster as the manipulator is never as skilled as they claim to be. All you need to look at is Greenspan’s anti-inflation campaign that overly cooled the economy. I think the tax code I proposed would be a huge boon for this type of project. Those profits of Exxons would have been taxed first and they would be driven to invest in alternative fuels just to keep the mopney out of the government’s hands. I’ll leave this topic at that.

    But Bob, there were two layers of government in Louisana that were feckless and incompetent and mentally and physically unprepared to respond to that hurricane long before Brownie was proven to be as equally incompetent. Once again, there is plenty of blame to go around. I always shake my head, though, when everyone is so quick and willing to look to Washington for solutions to problems and for a place to place blame. If Louisana wasn’t such a corrupt state and if New Orleans wasn’t such a liberal welfare wasteland of people unwilling to leave because they were afraid they wouldn’t get their welfare checks, Katrina probably would have been only half as bad as it was. I say that since it ended up that everyone points their finger at Bush and Washington for the pre and post-Katrina effects, I say that the Federal government should have declared that New Orleans was a new federal district like Washington D.C.; The District of New Orleans. That way, the major impedement to restoring New Orleans, Kathleen Blanco, would have been removed. I give credit where credit is due and that credit goes to Ray Nagin. He has done more to try and get New Orleans back than anyone. As a part of the District of New Orleans restoration project, I would pay $150,000 to every home owner in the 9th Ward, the lowest spot in the city, and bulldoze every home and build a Catagory 5 capable levy system right through that neighborhood. $150K is enough to almost buy a new home anywhere in the country, except here of course. That is just one of the things I would do if I were in charge. There are two connections between Katrina and oil prices: 1) a majority of our oil is processed through the Port of New Orleans, 2) Bush has never had any control over either the paths of hurricanes or the price of oil. Katrina proved what an incalcuable asset New Orleans is to America and how the local corruption of New Orleans impacts our entire country. If terrorists really wanted to cripple our economy, the nuke they want to set off would be in New Orleans.

    I have something for you guys to ponder… Why are all of the news networks making a big deal of Tony Dungy being the first black head coach to win the Super Bowl when: 1) they harped on it for two weeks, 2) Lovie Smith would have had that distinction if he’d won, so it was a distinction without any difference, and 3)we are supposed to be moving to a color-blind society, aren’t we? I’m not taking any thing away from the great accomplishment of Dungy and I have heard his story for the last year what with the suicide of his son and all but isn’t it a bigger distinction that he is one of the few men in NFL history to both play and coach in a Super Bowl and win. Even Doug Williams, the first black quarterback to start a Super Bowl, is tired of talking about race. I long for the day when we all will get tired of talking about something as trival as the color of ones skin.

Rich against poor, white against black (or brown), why? The main reason (Corporate) is that stories about conflict or differences sell. The more subtle (here comes my looney conspiracy theory) is so that there is always a means to point out that those in charge (the good ole’ boys) are still in charge, no matter what gains are made by those who are not in charge.     At some point, GOP senators and congressmen need to understand that this war is no longer a battle between Republican war heroes and Democratic 60s hippie freaks. The lines have now been blurred by Bush’s bungling war strategy. Now we find ourselves in a fight between war heroes and war heroes. Former secretaries of Navy and former Vietnam POWs. Conservative Republicans and protectors of the president.

    That may not be so bad for George W. Bush in the short run, but it is a disaster for Republicans in 2008 and beyond.

    Conservatives had better wake up before all the gains made by Ronald Reagan and the 1994 Revolution are lost. The clock is ticking.

    Yeah, Bob, your theory is kind of looney. Once again, for your conspiracy to be true, ther would have to be thousands of co-conspirators in on it and that is just too much to be believed. I do think that the reason why the race angle is overhyped is for two reasons: 1) to make blacks feel like they still have the past to overcome and 2) liberals still feel guilty over America’s racist past and need to point out how far the once lowly blacks in America have come. The first is to keep the “civil rights” movement going, which has been damn near dead since the Civil Rights Act past in 64. The second is liberals unwilling to let the past go and actually embrace the color-blind society concept in deeds not just words. Look at the numbers: there were 26 white coaches, none made it to the Super Bowl. Conversely, there were 6 black coaches last year. Two were fired (sorry ass Raiders and the underperforming Cardinals; both firings justified by any standard) and three coaches made it to the playoffs (50%)with two making it to the Super Bowl. It is about quality over quantity. Imagine what kind of high road ESPN or CBS could have taken if they started their broadcast on Sunday with “Yes, there are two black men as coachs competing here today, and this will be the last time we talk about it.” It’s time that all people start practicing what MLK preached and actually start judging people by the content of their character instead of the color of their skin, and it is high time to start evaluating performance and performance alone instead of performance as a member of a group.
