Defending Jerry (Sort of)

Bloggers have been piling on Jerry Dagna as of late, hurling all sorts of racist accusations against him, accusing him of being a racist for references to Barack Obama as an :oreo” and saying “a spade is a spade.”

I ended up deleting some of the more controversial points and I understand the outrage against the language. But here is a posting from uber-liberal Maureen Dowd in the N.Y. Times, essentially suggesting far more eloquently than Jerry that Sen. Obama often tries to be more white than black. I’m not judging nor accusing the man — I share this Op-Ed with you merely to point out that others share Jerry’s point.

Handicapping this duel goes beyond race, gender

By MAUREEN DOWD
Columnist
MANCHESTER, N.H. | So the question of the moment is: Which would be a greater handicap in a presidential bid, gender or race?

The answer will depend, of course, on how manly the woman, and how white the black.

Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama both straddle two worlds, trying to profit from both.

Despite her desire to seem far more experienced than her rival, Hillary’s role in high-level politics has been mostly that of a spouse — a first lady who felt that she got elected, too. The Yale-trained lawyer had one pump in “The West Wing” and one in “Desperate Housewives”; one foot in the world of hotshot alphas ruling the globe and one in the world of middle-age women humiliated by their husbands’ dallying with office cupcakes.

She won her Senate seat only after becoming sympathetic as a victim. And she still struggles with the balance between her Mars and Venus sides, sometimes showing her political steel and other times fetching coffee for male colleagues.

Obama glides between the black and white political worlds. In New Hampshire on Sunday, speaking to nearly all-white audiences, the Harvard-educated lawyer looked utterly at home, dressing like a Wall Street banker on casual Friday and sounding as white as Lou Dobbs.

He admits that he talks to black groups with a different cadence but says that’s because he’s picking up a different rhythm from the audience. He rejects what he calls the expected script for black politicians, “that for them to be authentically black they have to somehow offend white people,” as he told Jeff Zeleny in The Chicago Tribune.

The most politically unproblematic black man to ever dream of national office, Obama is Clinton’s worst nightmare. He is as comfortable in his skin as she is uncomfortable in hers.

“When push comes to shove, I think gender is going to be a harder sell than race,” said Deb Chase, a teacher from Gilmanton, N.H., who followed Obama from Portsmouth to Manchester, to see him twice. “It’s not that people don’t intellectually believe in the idea of a woman as president. But look at the schools here — there are lots of women teaching elementary school and very few women superintendents of schools.”

But, like other Democrats in New Hampshire, Chase thinks the issue transcends gender, that the problem is Hillary herself.

Unlike her impertinent challenger, Hillary will have to do a lot of fancy dancing to explain her opinions about the Iraq war. And we know that she’s not a good dancer.

Built on a cult of personality, her campaign will be ruthless in stomping on Obambi, as a Chicago columnist referred to the idealistic pol who was too naïve to steer clear of a sleazy fundraiser who wanted to buy his favor with a sweetheart real estate deal.

Hillary hasn’t waited this long and market-tested this assiduously for nothing. Obambi’s message may be mushy communitarianism — we’re a crazy quilt and why can’t we all get along? — but her message is simply the Divine Right of Clintons.

So there is a second question, perhaps one that will trump race and gender. It’s about whether he’s tough and she’s genuine.

It looks like slim pickings for the Dems (again). I hope they’re keeping their options open, but if push comes to shove…Obama would be their only viable choice.

I don’t believe that H.C. has the skill and talent to lead this nation. I believe that she is a weak willed personality who would place her vanity before the needs of the country. What has she done recently that would affirm that she has presidential qualities.

Mr. Obama presents just the opposite image. If anything I am of the opinion that this country is more apt to put a black male in office than a white female, especially one as eloquent as Mr. Obama.

So who will the Dems throw their lot with? And is America ready for either one?

The Republicans are already attacking obama. Limbaugh is going after him for being thin-skinned and playing up his Dumbo-like ears. There’s a very unflattering photo of BO with Dumbo ears added.

I think Obama looks great on paper, but i worry that the media will turn on him once/if he declares.

I don’t like Mrs. Clinton. I’m done with the Clintons. I wish Gore would run again. He deserves to be president. He was ROBBED in 2000 and look what happened as a result.

redleg: Slim pickings for the Dems (again)? Oh jeez, come on man, look at what the Republicans have so far, Newt Gingrich (on his third wife, even leaving his first wife while she was recuperating from cancer) Rudy Giuliani (kept a mistress while he was Mayor of New York)- but hey, they are the party of family values… As for the “slim pickings” for the Dems, two unannounced Senators do not make a campaign race. The main reason the speculation about the Democrats who may run is two fold; the Republicans don’t have a serious candidate yet, and more importantly, the so-called liberal media (which is really the corporate controlled media) has chose to avoid talking about how badly the Republicans got spanked on November 7, and how the Democrats have some real plans to accomplish stuff, unlike the do-nothing 109th Congress. Of course the first couple of things the new 110th Congress will have to attend to is the unfinished business from the 109th. The unpassed spending bills were left on purpose so that the Republicans can accuse the Democrats of “spending, spending, spending” and if the unprecidented-at-a-time-of-war tax cuts are rescinded, the Republicans will accuse the Democrats of “raising taxes, again”. Very crafty those Republicans in Washington. As to JerryD being a racist or not, Jerry, do you consider yourself a racist?

I understand the purpose Jerry serves – he makes good talk radio. Just like A.G. Andy and his Bible, he’ll inflame until he gets enough critical mass going and everybody will start shooting back. Makes for lively discussion. But, its like eating styrofoam or drinking light beer – it might fill you up but there ain’t much substance there. Don’t try to elevate Jerry to be anything other than he is. And please don’t try to defend him – he deserves what he gets.
The Maureen Dowd article was interesting, but it just serves my point – everyone in the media just cant resist stirring the s@#t to get reactions out of people. Its starting to get real old.
I need another dose of Michelle Dostert. And an ice ice cold martini.

MOST PARENTS DON’T TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT SEX AND DRUGS AND SMOKING…SO WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT RACE, ESPECIALLY NATIONALLY! IT’S JUST TOO DARN UNCOMFORTABLE, AND MOST HAVE NOT SORTED OUT THEIR THOUGHTS BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID TO FIND WHAT MAY BE UNDER THEIR POLITICALLY CORRECT THIN SKIN.
SOME DON’T LIKE IT ENOUGH THAT THEY TRY TO DOUSE THE FIRE WITH TV SITCOMS AND ALCOHOL, AND OTHER METHODS…THEY JUST DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH IT.
FACT IS, WE ARE ALL RACISTS AT THE CORE. THAT IS THE ONTOLOGICAL CORE OF EVERY HUMAN BEING. SOME HOWEVER ARE WILLING TO ATTEMPT A DIALOGUE AND SOME JUST WANT IT TO GO AWAY SO BADLY THAT THEY WILL TRY TO SHOVE THE PERSON OR THE COMMENTS INTO SOME LEAD LINED BOX IN THE BACK OF THEIR BRAINS BECAUSE THEY CANT CONFRONT NOR DEAL WITH THEIR OWN INNER DEMONS ON THE ISSUE.
WELL DENIAL WILL BE NATIONALLY OUT THE WINDOW IN THIS NEXT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. RACE, MALE VS FEMALE, HOMOSEXUAL POLITICIANS, SEXUAL ABUSE BY ELECTED OFFICIALS…IT’S ALL ON THE TABLE.
SO YOU CAN JUMP INTO THE KIDDY POOL NOW WHILE THE WATER IS SHALLOW…OR WAIT UNTIL THE SUCKER GROWS TO A RAGING TORRENT…EITHER WAY YOU WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT, AND THEIR AREN’T ENOUGH MARTINIS IN THE WORLD TO DROWN IT OUT ONCE IT STARTS RELEASE ITS FULL FURRY.
BRAVE UP LIL BUCKAROOS! REFLECT AND CONVERSE…THIS CHANCE MAY NEVER COME AGAIN SO GENTLY.

I’d love to hear the dinner coversation around the Dagna dinnertable

“Dad, why do some people have different colored skin?
“well son, because God made them that way”.
” why did God do that?”
“Well son, thats Gods way of letting us know who is inferior to us. See, we’re white, the purest color. The darker the skin, the more inferior. Thats how He shows us who to hate and fear.”
“but I thought God loved everyone?”
“where did you get that crazy idea, son?”
    “from the bible”
“here, let me see your bible”
    (sound of ripping paper)
    “there, now THATS Gods teachings”
    “Gee, thanks dad!”
“You’re welcome son. Now go out and play – but not with Luis, Lafonda or Herschell”
    “Why not Herschell, dad?”
    “Another time, son, another time.”

All you libs are all wet when it comes to why the focus on Obama, oh I’m sorry Barak Hussein Obama. The main thrust, from my point of view, is that both Hillary and Obama are frauds. They cultivate a public personna that is totally different than their private ones. Not only that, what Maureen Dowd is really talking aobut is the gender pandering from Hillary and the racial pandering from Obama. Hillary tries (and fails) to look matronly as she attempts to run with the alpha-types and rule the world. Obama tries to look smooth, articulate, intellectual and non-threatening to the white audience while trying to maintain connection to his “black” heritage (he’s only half black, as you all know). If he, (or any other person of mixed heritage on the order of Tiger Woods, Halle Berry, or Obama), were to say that they identified with their white heritage more than their black, the liberal black establishment would crucify and destroy them. So Obama has to keep both sides happy to further his political ambitions.

That all being said, Dave, not once did Maureen use the word “oreo” or “spade” in he description of Obama.

bob, what a hypocrit you are! Rudy may have kept a mistress while Mayor of New York, but you have gone to great lengths to point out Repuclican hypocracy about Bill Clinton, who kept a mistress while Governor of Arkansas (pronounced properly as Ar-Kansas) and while in the White House. And if all you can bring up is Newt having a woman on the side while his first wife lay dying, you all are going to lose in ’08. Newt, regardless of what you may think of him personally, is probably one of a handful of visionary thinkers on either side of the aisle.

The tax and spend thing you brought up Bob is only half right. Yes, the Republicans set up the Democrats on those spending bills, but the Democrats are setting themselves up when they refuse to even consider extending the Bush tax cuts, which will result in a tax hike on everyone.

You have no point on the Republican “ass kicking”. If Tim Johnson succumbs to his brain issue, it will be a 50-50 senate (as every Democrat/liberal talking head has told me) and with Cheney casting tie breaking votes, the Republicans will be back in control. That doesn’t rise to the level of “ass kicking” if a Dem. senator in a coma is the balance between Dem or Rep control of the Senate.

Other than that, have a Merry Christmas.

OK, has anyone seen the movie “Crash” — which happened to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Good movie, I thought, but it also showed a clear lack of racial harmony and how all of us can be uncomfortable with people from different races and backgrounds. There is a certain degree of racism or intolerance in all of us — thankfully, the bar seems to be set higher and higher each year.

If you haven’t seen the movie, I’d suggest renting it.

Let’s be clear with what Rush Limbaugh said: Maureen Dowd writes soemthing about Barak Obama having big ears. Obama sees Dowd after a speech Obama had just delibvered in New Hampshire and proceeds to tell Dowd that she is “on notice” (whatever the hell that means) because he hated being teased about having big ears when he was a kid. Dowd laughs it off and tells him “we’re just toughening you up”.

Limbaugh points out that if a Republican had told Dowd that he hated it when she made fun of X (whatever that may be), Maureen Dowd and the rest of the liberal Op-ed establishment would spend the next six months focused on whatever X was. Rush is just taking up the slack of Dowd and her crew by making sure that Obama is made fun of by someone.

What it really illustrates is who weak-minded and insecure Obama is and really who unfit to be president he is. Come on! Can we turn the fate of this country over to a man that is easily upset when someone makes fun of his ears? What would he do if a nuke went off in Boston?

Sorry Bob, but it slim pickings. It’s a well known fact that historically both parties have skeleton in their closets. So let’s give that matter a rest.

As for family values…do you really think I believe either side when they bring up the subject? If I did care it would be akin to me getting some kind moral and ethical enlightenment from “The Jerry Springer Show”. No thanks I’ll pass.

As for the “ass whuppin'”…PA-LEEEEZE! Spare me from the idea that there was some kind of “mandate” this last election. A landslide is mandate. This was a tap on the shoulder. I believe the Dems are going to “step on their twinkies with golf shoes”, and be lucky to have any political credibility by 2008.

On the matter of Jerry. I like Jerry. He’s kind of fun. If anything he brightens the place up…like his little map of thr U.S.. He makes daves blog experience all the more interesting.

Now having said that. In the matter of the “J Man” being a racist. I personally don’t think it’s racism. I think it something deeper that is inherent to all of us. Something in our primitive psyche. Kind like a pack or tribal mentality. Two groups that have many similarities can leery of the other maybe because one prefers to wear their baseball cap in a different manner from the other. Hell, up until 1978 my grandmother refered to blacks as “colored” or “negroes”. On occasion she refered to the children “pickaninis”. Was she a racist. No. This was the carry over from that period in which grew up in.

    Rich,

I hate to disappoint you, but once again Rush plays fast and loose with the facts. This isn’t the first time he’s been caught. This is from Media Matters:

“In her October 21 New York Times column (subscription required), Maureen Dowd wrote that potential Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (IL) is “intriguingly imperfect,” citing as one example the fact that “[h]is ears stick out.” In a December 11 weblog entry, Chicago Sun-Times Washington bureau chief Lynn Sweet wrote that Obama, following a press conference the previous day in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, “headed toward New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and chided her — in a kidding way — for a comment in the 12th of 14 paragraphs in an Oct 21 column. She wrote that Obama’s ‘ears stick out.’ ” During the exchange, Obama said: “I just want to put you on notice. I’m very sensitive,” adding, “I was teased relentlessly when I was a kid about my big ears.”

However, on the December 14 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio program, Rush Limbaugh played an audio clip of Obama’s comments to Dowd, claimed that he is “sensitive about his big ears,” and said: “This is a man being lauded as the savior of the country, a presidential candidate ready to be anointed, and he can’t handle being teased about his big ears?” Limbaugh even gave Obama a “nickname” — “Barack Hussein Odumbo.”

From the December 14 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks’ The Rush Limbaugh Show:

OBAMA: You talked about my ears. I just want to put you on notice: I’m very sensitive about — what I told them was, ”I was teased relentlessly when I was a kid about my big ears.’ “

DOWD: We’re just trying to toughen you up.

LIMBAUGH: “We’re just trying to toughen you up.” Here is what Barack Obama said: Talk about my ears, so “I just want to put you on notice: I’m very sensitive about — what at I told them was that [sic] ‘I was teased relentlessly when I was a kid about my big ears.’ “

Now, there are many aspects of this, folks, that we need to delve into and explore. For one thing — I mean, you know me — if the guy is sensitive about his big ears, we need to give him a new name, like Dumbo, but that doesn’t quite get it. You know, just calling him — calling him — that just doesn’t — how about Barack Hussein Odumbo?

Well, if he’s sensitive — stop to think about this. This is a man being lauded as the savior of the country, a presidential candidate ready to be anointed, and he can’t handle being teased about his big ears? And he goes out to Maureen Dowd and says, “I am putting you on notice”? Is that a threat? I want to put you on notice?

Limbaugh’s attack on Obama was echoed by several conservative bloggers, and by MSNBC host Tucker Carlson, who cited Limbaugh’s website as his source for claiming that Obama “apparently was annoyed with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd after she commented upon the size of his ears.” He then asked: “[I]s he ready to take on the presidency?” Tucker posed the question to Los Angeles Times columnist Rosa Brooks, calling Obama a “sensitive little man.” Brooks rejected Carlson and Limbaugh’s suggestion, saying: “I think you’ve got this totally wrong. He was teasing her.”

Who’s playing fast and loose with the facts here, Dave? You and Media Matters or Rush and Tucker Carlson. Nothing in what you put out just now disputes anything that either Obama said or what Rush Limbaugh said afterward. The facts are the facts: Nothing is being disputed about what Obama and Dowd said to each other. What is in dispute, it appears, is whether Obama was seriously leveling some sort of threat to Dowd and she responded by saying he needed toughening up or that this was just a joke between two people, Dowd and Obama. Only Obama and Dowd know for sure. Furthermore, I agree with Rush that if Rush had told MoDo or any other liberal op-ed writer to stop writing about his drug addiction, viagra, deafness, weight or any other human failing of Limbaugh’s, he would forever be referred to as the “recovering addict, Rush Limbaugh” or “the man busted with Viagra, Rush Limbaugh” or “Rush Limbaugh, who lost his hearing from hi drug addiction (a double whammy)”. He is pointing out the kid gloves treatment that Democrat presidental hopefulls get in the press. You can bet that if the tables were turned and it was Condaleeza Rice’s husband that had been President and had an affair with an intern, the press would be asking the presidental hopefull Rice that if she got elected, would it be her turn to have an affair with an intern? Or was she just staying with her husband as a stepping stone to the White House? Rush, from his point of view, is exposing the liberal op-ed media’s hypocracy on how liberals and conservatives are treated in the press.

So, stop talking and get yourself inbedded as a reporter and see for yourself. I’m sure George Ramos could get you credentalled with the LA Times. You’re a real brave man to bad mouth the Bush twins and Hannity, now step up and go see Iraq for yourself. I’m sure you won’t go because reality would challenge your biases against the war and we just can’t have that, can we? I no more expect you to try to go to Iraq and give the listeners of “Hometown Radio” a first-hand account of what is going on in Iraq than you would be e-mail my Iraqi friend and apologize on behalf of all Americans for disrupting the paradise on earth that was the regime of Saddam Hussein.
