"We Are Not Winning in Iraq"

OK, let’s guess who made that statement just this week. Was it (A) Michele D (B) Santa Maria Bill or (C) Secretary of Defense designate Robert Gates.

Of course it is (C) and you have to be totally blind to miss the massive shift in strategy that seems to be unfolding in Washington on the issue of Iraq. This whining about “cutting and running” can only be heard now from the likes of Rush and Sean. Cooler heads, wiser heads are finally realizing the mess that has been created and we’re looking for solutions. At least Gates is willing to acknowledge that which even Donald Rumsfeld had to finally admit just before he was sacked in November — we need to change our policy in Iraq.

So now we have the Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group. Here’s a brief snippet from today’s headlines about the group:

“A bipartisan commission briefed President Bush Wednesday on changing course in Iraq amid intensifying pressure on the White House to find a way out.

The high-profile Iraq Study Group planned to publicly release its recommendations later in the day after also briefing congressional leaders behind closed doors.

The commission is expected to advise gradually changing the mission of U.S. troops in Iraq from combat to training and supporting Iraqi units, with a goal of pulling back American combat troops by early 2008. It is also expected to urge a more energetic effort to involve Iraq’s neighbors in ending violence there. This outreach would include Iran and Syria, which the U.S. considers pariah states.

Bush has rejected establishing timetables for withdrawing troops and has said he wasn’t looking for “some kind of graceful exit out of Iraq.”

The commission also was to recommend that Bush threaten to reduce economic and military support for the Iraqi government if it doesn’t meet certain benchmarks for improving security,”

Most of our segments have already been scheduled for the week, but we’ll definitely talk about the Iraq Study Group and its implications. I’m curious about what you think. Post away.

Meanwhile, on Thuirsday, we’ve got some local high school students who have been researching Wal Mart and want to share their findings. Adam Hill returns on Friday to discuss all things Mexico. New SLO city council member Andrew Carter drops by next Wednesday to talk SLO politics. Lots of good stuff coming up. Stay tuned!

GATES SAID WHAT WAS NEEDED TO SLIP BY THE DEFEATOCRATS! HE LATER CORRECTED HIS STATEMENT AND SAID, “WE ARE BOTH WINNING AND LOSING IN IRAQ”…

TERRORISTS ALL OVER THE WORLD KNOW HOW WEAK AND GUTLESS DEMOCANTS ARE AND WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR COWARDICE…SO THE REPUBLICANS ARE NOW FIGHTING A BATTLE AGAINST TERROR GLOBALLY AND FIGHTING AGAINST THE WIMPS OF THE SOULLESS, SPINELESS “NANCIES” IN WASHINGTON.

WHILE THE DEMS RUB COCO BUTTER ALL OVER THE FASCISTS BUTTS OF THE TERRORISTS THE REPUBLICANS WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP AMERICA SAFE WHILE WINNING THE GLOBAL BATTLE ON TERROR.

THE NEW HOUSE ANDS SENATE ARE JUST LIKE TEENAGERS…THEY WILL SETTLE FOR ANYTHING DURING THE WEEK THAT LETS THEM GO OUT ON FRIDAY FOR SEX AND DRUGS…THE REPUBLICANS CAN HANDLE THEM AS THEY IMPLODE AND SELF DESTRUCT.

AFTER ALMOST 8 YEARS THEY STILL DON’T HAVE A CANDIDATE THAT CAN WIN 2008…MOST AMERICANS WILL NOT VOTE FOR HILLARY AND THEY ALSO WANT A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO AT LEAST BE DRY BEHIND THE EARS.
YOU MUST REALLY BE IN DENIAL IF YOU THINK AMERICA WOULD ELECT A PRIVILEGED SILVER SPOONED OREO CANDIDATE WITH NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL! GET REAL!

Bad Jerry, bad Jerry. You are wrong to call Obama an oreo (I know who you were talking about). Oreo, eggplant, etc, terms like that are not much different than calling Obama a N—– (you know the Michael Richards term I am refering to) I don’t tolerate anyone talking like that, Jerry, so knock it off.

FYI: Obama and his wife closed escrow on a $1,650,000 home last year in Chicago

payments on a home like that would be around $15,000 per month! Unless he paid cash.

Obama is what happens when a young leader sells his soul for power, wealth, and personal advancement in a militantly hierarchical society. It’s what happens when you invest your energy in “jockey[ing] for authority over others.” It’s a very old story, making Obama one of many actors in a timeless and tragic drama.

    okay this is getting ridiculous

why does it matter that Barrack Obama bought a 1.6 mil house? He’s worked hard for what he has and, lets be serious, that amount of money buys an upper middle class urban dwelling – hell most of us who own property here on the central coast are approaching million dollar homes.

What does matter is that someone on this blog is allowed to utter a racist remark and go unchallenged by half the people posting here.

Good for you Rich for calling him on it. I’ve said it before – I dont agree with you most of the time but I respect the hell out of your principled, intelligent way of expressing yourself.

I’M NOT ALONE! THIS HAS MADE IT TO OVER 55,000,000 COMPUTERS AND STIL GOING STRONG! READ IT AND WEEP. WE ARE TAKING OUR COUNTRY BACK!

    “I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!”-

By Rick Roberts – 760 KFMB AM

I don’t mean t o go off on a rant here, but here’s the bottom line, I want my country back.

I want my kids to be able to walk to the store or walk to school without being abducted by some 3-time convicted child molester. And the politically correct powers that be in this country just can’t seem to get over themselves with “CAN’T WE JUST HELP THIS PERSON!” No! You can’t. But they’re let loose to prey on more children. I want my kids back.

    I want my country back.

I don’t agree with everything this President does. I’ve never agreed with anything 100% that any President has done or said.

You know, I was very young during the Vietnam War. So I probably missed that thing by a hair. I don’t know whether I would have agreed with that or not at the time. I was too stupid to have an opinion at that point and time even though I thought I did.

    I want my country back.

I want some semblance of respect for authority, whether I agree with it all or not.

I want the Boy Scouts to be “boy” scouts, not boy and “we think she’s a girl” scouts. I want Girl Scouts to be “girl” scouts not Girl Scouts and “Bruce.”

    I want my country back.

I want to be able to wake up in the morning knowing that I can walk outside without some gang-banger on parole taking my life.

Or being able to go down and purchase a car without having to worry about, you know, 90% of the parts being made overseas in some sweatshop.

I want my politicians, when they finally do get my vote, to do what they said they were going to do in the first place.

I want the Abramoff’s of the world to be labeled what they are….nothing more than organized crime in a better suit.

I want people to say something and when they say something look at me in the eye. And mean what they say. Not say what they think I want to hear. And then do what they want to later, politically or any other way.

I want to be able to go out and work and make a decent wage and buy a home. Half the people that are listening to me right now can’t even afford to buy a house unless they’re working three jobs.

And I want America to be America. All of those opportunities, all of those things that made her great, I want those returned to the forefront. If you want to come to this country we welcome you with open arms. We simply ask that you abide by our laws. I don’t want you to snub your nose at our laws, then take advantage of our opportunities, and then cling to the constitution most of which you can’t even read because you don’t speak the language.

I want us to secure our borders because the country is worth securing. The people that live here are worth protecting.

    I want my country back.

I want my children back. I want some semblance of what this country used to be. It’s worth protecting. It’s worth defending. I don’t recognize this country anymore.

Not politically, not philosophically, not spiritually.

Whether you like it or whether you don’t, God was a part of building this great nation. To remove him is to take away the very foundation of what this country was all about.

I don’t care about your political correctness!

I don’t want to know your sexual preference!

I could care less about all of that. Stop making it the headline of the day!

    That’s not America.

    I want my country back!

And the only way I’m ever going to be able to get this country back is if I reach out to the broth ers and the sisters that all feel the same way and we say “No! You can’t have our country.” It’s not for sale! Take the price tag off this country!

Take the price tag off the heads of our children! Stop it already!

The politically-correct-psychobabble-hug-a-tree-experts ~~ You are not qualified to release sex offenders back into our neighborhoods.

The southern border, more than any other border, needs to be secured tomorrow. For all those that wish to come to this country to take advantage of her opportunity, to live under a constitution, a living document that breathes in and out just like you do. This country is not for sale. I should know. I’m one of the owners. You can’t sell it without my permission.

Please pass this along. Let’s see if we can send it to everyone in the USA that has a computer.

I want my country to move forward

I want people to accept other people for who they are, what they contribute to society, and let those people have the same rights as everyone else. Just like we did for the blacks and for women.

I want my country to move forward

I don’t want a president who bases his decisions on God speaking to him. Religion is a private thing between a person and their maker. Keep it to yourself and out of my face. Merry Christams

I want my country to move forward

I want us to focus on the real threats to the world. I want people to listen to scientists who study these things and believe them when they say we are threatening our own survival. I don’t want decisions that affect the survival of my children based on quarterly profit statements.

I want my country to move forward

I want things like racism and intolerance to be archaic principles that are only referenced in history texts.

Hey Dave!. Your friend Jerry is a racist just in case you haven’t noticed by his comments which up until now have targeted Mexicans in particular. I see he has moved on to black Americans with his comment directed at Barack Obama and calling him an Oreo. So Dave what are you going to do?. Anything?.

    December 7, 2006 at 7:48 am

I don’t intend to censor Jerry, though we have drifted way off topic on this round of postings thanks to his initial rant.

Hopefully you’ve figured out by now that Jerry likes to stir the pot, but he often forgets that in doing so, the heart of his argument is lost by his flame-throwing rhetoric.

So, instead of censoring, I prefer to let Jerry sink under the weight of his personal attacks.

But I do agree with one of Jerry’s points — why is everyone so hot for Sen. Obama, a man with limited experience in any one area.

    Any thoughts?

  15. rob in los osos
    December 7, 2006 at 3:59 pm

    Dave

Three points. First, I don’t think that everyone is ‘hot’ for Barrack Obama. He’s just got a good PR firm getting his name out there, and the lapdog media is quick to comply. But, that being said, look at our current President and his lack of experience when elected. Furthermore, JFK was similarly inexperienced. I myself would prefer to have a President, from whichever party, who is intelligent, WELL SPOKEN, and able to build cross party consensus – Obama does seem at first glance to have these qualities.

Second point – I find it hysterical that any republican would attempt to criticize ANY democratic Presidential candidate in comparison to who they ran the last two elections.

Third point – I’m surprised you’re going to allow Mr Capslocks’ racist remark to go unchallenged. I understand your argument about letting him bury himself, but that type of remark crosses the line.

Jerry, your points about Obama being an empty suit that speaks well are fine, you just don’t need to call him a spade or an oreo to make your point.

Second, you John Kerry-esque explanation that Oreos are the most expense and therefore like Obama is idiotic. You must think us to be morons if you think we’re buying that pile of garbage that passed as your explanantion.

Third, (and this one is for Rob) the current office holder beat your guy, narrowly, the first time and beat the crap out your guy the second time, verbal missteps and all. If all you care about is how well spoken a candidate is then you are primed to fall for a puppet that speaks well but stands for nothing. There has to be substance behind the rhetoric or else he is nothing but a power hungry stooge willing to sell their sould for that power.

    December 7, 2006 at 5:49 pm

    Rob,

    Your points are well-taken.

Jerry labels Obama an “Oreo.” Yep, the term is harsh and derogatory and also totally untrue. If you’ve heard Obama’s speeches, read his resume and know of his work with inner-city children, etc, you know that he fully embraces his African heritage (though I believe his mother is white and from Kansas). Jerry is completely wrong on every level (not the first time)

But now look what you made me do — I just spent two minutes of my life that I’ll never get back, two minutes I could have spent petting a dog or hugging my wife, to respond to Jerry on a serious level.

THAT’S not part of my Clear Channel contract.

Okay JerryD, I have finally figured you out; you are a hatriot, one who practices Hatriotism, defined as: “Proving your patriotism by hating the people the government tells you to hate.” Of course that only works if you agree with the vision of the leadership of the government. Most likely as the vision of the government changes, your form of hatriotism will change to include: “Proving your patriotism by hating the people or things you are instructed to hate by demagogues, arbiters of social or moral issues, or politicians inside of or outside of the current government administration.” But then again, you may just hate my conclusion.

Back to the subject of the threadd: The Iraq Study Group is a sham, pure and simple. It is a partisan group with one goal: the United States defeat n Iraq. You think I’m wrong? Why is there not one retired general on the staff of the ISG? Zinni is available, so is Shinseki or Krulack of the Marines. Batiste is out of the military. None of those “experts” that appear on every talking head Sunday show were invited to the group. Why are their so many people with publically stated opposition to the Iraq War on the staff of the ISG? The answer to both questions is that this is not a “non-partisan” study group but a highly partisan group trying to facilitate our defeat in Iraq. They restate what the President Bush has stated several times as the “Way Forward” as if it was something new. Oh, and we have to negotiate with all of the people that are destabilizing Iraq and convince them to stop… and we have to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict even though it has been going on for 60 years, but we have to solve it now to save Iraq… and we have to stay in Afghanistan to make the Iranians feel better about not having the Taliban around(?). Each of the the three courses of action that were leaked were discredited in the ISG report. To wit: we can’t stay, because things will get worse; we can leave because things will get worse; and we can’t increase US troops because things will get worse. So, the ISG wants us to do what the president has already said with the new wrinkle of more diplomacy, as if diplomacy is the panecea for all of the Iraqis problems (read my posting on the U.S. history of war and diplomacy and how we have talked ourselves into half of all of the wars we have fought). The ISG report has been rejected by the Iraqis as having impuned their sovereignty by presupposing that the US act unilaterally, like the Iraqi government doesn’t have a say. I find that the ISG is a worthless document full of pap and pandering to the anti-war intelligencia of America. I have read the document, all 94 pages found on the web (for free!!) and found it to be a hollow, substanceless shell of a document that is supposed to provide the Democrats with the cover they need to still have no clue what to do about Iraq. It is a waste of effort for me to have spent so much time talking about a document that was a waste of time six months in the making.
