George W. Bush finally makes it to Viet Nam!

I know, I know, it’s a cheap shot at our Pretender-in-Chief, but it’s been that kind of week for Mr. Bush. He’s flying around Asia at the moment, as things continue to look bleak in the Middle East.

How bleak? Well, take your choice. Tony Blair admits Iraq is “a disaster” (before he backpedals). Critically, Henry Kissinger announces that “a military victory in Iraq is no longer possible.” 112 people were killed in Iraq just today. 112! Meanwhile, John McCain wants to send in even more U.S. troops and Charlie Rangel wants to bring back the military draft. I have no trouble with a draft, as long as IT IS FAIR AND INCLUDES EVERYONE. We can’t fight terrorism without sufficent troop strength. Bring the draft back and make Americans sacrifice and truly realize what we’re up against. Will it happen? Probably not, but it’s time to have the dialogue.

Meanwhile the neo-cons continue to attack Bush, bashing him for the poor way he’s fought the war.

So President Bush doesn’t have much to be happy about these days. Did you cvatch the cover story in Newsweek called “Father Knows Best”? Suddenly 41 is starting to look like a good president. And there’s talk that Karl Rove is on his way out.

Worst U.S. President in modern American history. No doubt about it.

Short week on the radio this week because of the holiday. New shows air on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and FRiday will feature “Best of Dave.”

We’ll give away free turkeys from Spencer’s on Monday at 5:05.

Jerry, they forget that Bush is not on the ballot in ’08 yet the persist in trying to run against him.

Worst president of the modern era? Jimmy Carter hold the title for “Worst president in any era” hands down. I would take Bush 43’s record over Jimbo’s any day of the week.

I remember when Democrats would actually stand for something and take actions instead of just giving platitudes. Ol’ FDR fixed the Great Depression, Harry “the Buck stops here” Truman bombed the Japs to end WWII and integrated the armed forces because it was the right thing to do. Today, all I hear is hot air and all I see is pandering.

Oh, I forgot one other thing that Dave mentioned: the draft. I have no problem with a draft, but as I said earlier to someone else, a draft army would take 5 years before it would be ready to take the field of battle. We lack the infrastructure after Bill Clinton cashed in the “Peace Dividend”. BRAC shuttered several posts, like Fort Ord and Fort Dix, turning them into schools or whatnot like University of California at Monterey Bay (which the Dept of the Army is still paying money for clean up). I think that people who choose to do things put more honest effort into things than people who are forced to do something. In other words, people who choose to be in the military try harder and do better than people who are forced into it. If every able bodied man and woman was forced to serve in the military for a brief period of time, discipline problems would skyrocket as those who didn’t want to be there worked harder on getting out than doing their job. The draft “appears” to be the big thumb in the eye of the so-called “chickenhawk” Republicans, but as I stated in an earlier post, just as many Democrats haven’t served and people like Don Rumsfeld, who did serve, don’t get proper credit for their service. By the way, Dave, how come you didn’t get drafted? Bob says he was just lucky that the draft ended before his low number was called. What’s your story?

Jerry seems to have some real problems with homosexuality, among other things. I wonder if Jerry, like Mark Foley, has some internal conflicts.

How ’bout it Jerry. Are you gay?.

Guys, when you respond to any of JerryD’s more inane comments you are only encouraging him to continue. Don’t stoop to his level, he is following the classic troll behavior model. Write something as outrageous as you can to elicit a response and as a troll, you win.
Jerry, I don’t care one way or another about your sexual orientation or practices, but you do seem somewhat obsessed by former President Clinton’s affair that he had with a consenting adult while in office, an affair that had no impact on his ability to be the commander in chief.
As for worst President ever, how many Americans died from a terrorist attack during President Carter’s term of office? Oh, that’s right, NONE! How many countries did Jimmy Carter invade? NONE! Was Jimmy Carter a great, or even good president, no, he was ineffectual due mainly to his unwillingness to play rough and dirty with the Washington entrenched insiders.
President Clinton? Brought unemployment to a record low without fudging the way the numbers are reported, reduced the federal deficit while growing the economy at record levels. Foiled the Millennium Bomb plot, caught, arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to life the World Trade Center attackers from 1993.
President George W. Bush: Sat on his butt in a third grade classroom while the second Tower was slammed into by a plane of innocent Americans; failed to capture the admitted leader behind that same attack and then invaded a totally unrelated country leading to the death of nearly 3000 brave military personnel, the wounding and maiming of over 10,000 service members and the killing of possibly 150,000 to perhaps 600,000 Iraqi citizens. Let’s not forget how many people died and how many lost their homes, their jobs and their normal lives because President Bush failed to respond to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Worst. President.Ever. Period.

Ok Bob, You are wrong on several points. Let me correct the record for you.

Terrorism during the Carter: Um the fool that is president of Iran took hostages…and Carter invaded Iran to try to rescue them with a very unfunded military and the mission failed.

    Clinton:

Foiled 2000 Seattle bombing: Just an alert police officer at the border. Had nothing at all to do with any directives or policy of the administration.

Monica was 19, and Clinton was in a position of power. WOuld you do that to one of your hot dog stand girls? It is called sexual harassment. Also, Clinton has raped Kathleen Wiley, Jonita Broderick, and others. Foley, who is condemned by you because he is gay, was going after 18 year old guys and you think it is sick, but Clinton it is just fine with you. Pathetic. Barney Frank? YOU don’t care. Pelosi, NMbLA it is ok.

Clinton stock market crash of 2000. Bush and Clinton unemployment after 4 years in office 4.9% both.

Clinton set up the failures of intelligence by the “wall of separation between the CIA and FBI set up by 911 commission member and former assistant AG Nancy Gerellic.

Bush has to do with the fact that the corrupt politicians of New Orleans failed to properly prepare for an emergency and the right type of flood walls? Do you f’ing think that Bush needs to figure out how to carry your fat ass from your house if there is a disaster here in SLO? No, he cannot be familiar with every regions unique disaster plans. The governor and Mayor of New Orleans need to take that responsibility. Last I heard, Nagin left hundreds of buses in the water of Katrina. I suppose bush should have called out the drivers and send them on their way.

You are all forgetting how bad and horrible Kennedy was by propping up the catholic Diem of Vietnam and how he did not understand the problem in that country. He fought that war while lying to the american people saying the soldiers dying there were only advisors.

You are forgetting the travesty of LBJ who, like John Kerry, got a fake military award for being an observer on a plane when the pilot and other crew received no award.

Both of the latter played with our military while trying to get votes. Americans really did die for their seeking of power. Sick and SAD!

All of you need to open your minds to some different ideas and quit name calling. Clinton sucked, Bush is not the best, but overall he is doing a pretty good job when you really consider the past leadership since the 60’s.

Bob, you are certifiably insane. Here’s why:

“How many Americans died from a terrorist attack during President Carter’s term of office? Oh, that’s right, NONE!”

Oh, I suppose you consider our hostages sitting in our embassy as the embassy staff taking part as involuntary participants of a Iranian student sit-in? No, that was either a terrorist act that went unresponded to or it was an act of WAR that went unresponded to (I vote for the latter).

“How many countries did Jimmy Carter invade? NONE!”

That’s right, none because Carter was an ineffectually craven coward that would not lift a finger to free our hostages. The hostage crisis under Carter’s watch is a stain that, along with Clinton’s pull out of Somalia, has given our islamofascist adversaries the belief that America is a paper tiger with no will to fight for our citizens or what we believe in. George Bush changed that dynamic when he invaded both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Was Jimmy Carter a great, or even good president, no, he was ineffectual due mainly to his unwillingness to play rough and dirty with the Washington entrenched insiders.

What self-delusional bullshit you try to feed yourself! Carter was weak and ineffectual because Carter is a weak and ineffectual man, period. Congress was controlled by the Democrats all four years he was in the office. He couldn’t play hard ball with his own party when, as President, he was the leader of his own party? Come on, Bob, put the joint down, it is eroding your ability to reason.

“President Clinton? Brought unemployment to a record low without fudging the way the numbers are reported”

More sophistry that you have never proved with any evidence.

“reduced the federal deficit while growing the economy at record levels.”

The dot com boom was a sham. Clinton mortgaged long-term stability by going with lower interest short-term bonds to make the deficit look smaller because we weren’t spending as much on servicing the debt. When those short-term bonds expired and had to be replaced with higher interest bonds, the amount we spent on servicing the debt went up. Bush talked about this during the 2000 campaign and he was criticised for “talking down the economy”. No, he was telling the truth about the shell game that Clinton had been playing with the economy for two years.

    “Foiled the Millennium Bomb plot”
Oh, so Bill Clinton personally hired the Border Patrol agent that caught the guy? Talk about taking credit for other people’s work, but that is Bill Clinton for you.

“…caught, arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to life the World Trade Center attackers from 1993.” But he let the mastermind of the attack go scot free.

Here is where we disagree: You would prefer that he jumped out of his seat, terrified an entire school that was hundreds of miles away from NYC, started directing responses without any intelligence to support his actions (don’t confuse information with intelligence; there is a big difference) and then jsut started indeiscriminatly bombing the shit out of people around the world just because they might have been responsible. Again, Richard Clarke felt that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice were all extremely professional in the way they deligated the 9/11 crises to Clarke and his team of experts, however, Bush made several hard calls within minutes of the 2nd Tower being attacked, with granting permission to shoot down airplanes that appeared to be hijacked the biggest one. He returned to Washington against Clarke’s advice, (due to the rampant reports in the media of terrorist attacks on the ground in D.C., Clarke wanted POTUS to go to the “undisclosed location”) because he wanted America to know that he was in charge and unafraid of the terrorists. According to Clarke, Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld were the ones that sold Bush on Iraq being the state sponsor of the attacks. Yes, war plans existed when Bush and Cheney came to power, but war plans exist right now for the invasion of every country on earth; it’s what our military does, plan for contingencies.

The huge majority of blame for the Hurricane Katrina response rests on the shoulders of Nagin for not using the buses to get people out and for Blanco for not letting the military in sooner. Bush was engaged with his man Brownie on the ground. What is FEMA’s role in an emergency? Spend money, as it has only and always been, and spend money FEMA did. To blame Bush for Katrina is to blame FDR for Pearl Harbor; yeah, I suppose that he could have done stuff to prevent what happened but what happened happened and he was president so he gets some blame.

As for Carter: He presided over double digit inflation, double digit interest rates, skyrocketing gas prices, double digit unemployment; a military incapable of rescuing our hostages; an administration that lacked the will to confront our enemies; a terrible evaluator of personnel talent by the way he appointed a speachwriter to head the CIA; his response to high fuel costs coming out of the Middle East? He put on a sweater. Yeah, that’s leadership. He gave away the most precious piece of stratgic land in the world, the pananma canal, with no consideration to America’s long-term startegic need for that route from Pacific to Atlantic and vise versa. He let the Russians take over Afghanistan, offering only a whimper of rebuke in the form of a grain embargo and our not sending our Olympic team to Moscow for the 1980 games. Ronald Reagan is so much greater a president than Bill Clinton for 1) all he did during his presidency, 2) cleaning up the absolute disaster area that was the White House after the Carter (mis)Administration.

Dave, how about you try to go to Iraq as an inbedded reporter for the SLO Tribune? I bet you could get credentialled to do that if you wanted to. If you are scared, say you’re scared.
