The Quiet of Atascadero

We have about 20 days to the election on November 7th and it’s just a crazy time. Steve Diamond is running for city council in Grover; Allen Settle is running (again) for office in SLO. The Republicans have come up with another sacrificial lamb against Lois Capps in Vic Tognazinni and the Democrats have Sharon Berry to throw in token opposition to Kevin McCarthy in the 22nd District.

One of the hallmarks of my radio show for the last 15 years has been the one-on-one interviews or the debates we host featuring various local candidates. We’ve never had a candidates turn us down — Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Liberal. Never mattered. They always showed up at KVEC. Until now. On my show, we’ve only been able to offer interviews with Ellen Beraud and Mike Brennler. Tom Madsen has made repeated phone calls to the other candidates, inviting them to appear. Only Tom O’Malley returned the call, indicating that he would do the five minute interview on the morning news with Ben and King instead. But silence remains from Becky Pacas, Bob Kelley and Robert “Grigger” Jones.

O’Malley, Pacas, and Kelley ended up doing the morning news interviews, but Grigger Jones is nowhere to be found. He won’t do my show. He won’t do the morning news. This is the first mainstream candidates to ever thumb his nose at KVEC.

Of course, if you’ve been reading New Times these last few months, you know why. Karen Velie has done a bang-up job in documenting repeated mistakes by City Hall and those who aspire to be part of city council. O’Malley, Kelley and Jones will only appear in forums where they can control the questions. That’s unfortunate.

Meanwhile Becky Pacas has had a falling out with her political mentor George Luna and he’s withdrawn his support for her re-election, leaving her a candidate without a constituency.

That leaves the reform candidates — Brennler and Beraud. The good old boys up there are trying to smear these two people. I don’t know if either has a chance, but they represent the only possibility of oversight on the antics of the city manager and mayor who have gone out of their way to keep the public from participating in local issues which affect them.

So if you run across Grigger Jones, please ask him why he won’t talk to either KVEC or New Times. And keep watching for Karen Velie’s updates on the real Atascadero Zoo every Thursday in New Times.

Are they just running from you or have they also refused to be on Joe Benson’s Sound Off (KPRL)?

I am just so sick and tired of these crooks running Atascadero. We have Kelly Gearhart and two candidates meeting with the planning dept. to “better understand the process”. How stuipid are we to believe that nonsense! Like Gearhart is just learning his way around here! Give me a break dude!

Brennler seems a little better. Beraud seems like a straight liberal, and will probably put even more limits on property rights while running businesses out of town. Who to vote for? Too bad you moved Dave, you could be on the city counsel. Heck, even I would vote for you over these sorry people.

Shall we not herein dub thee:

    “olde drone of Atascaderoe?”

dave, you’re doing us, as the electorate, all a grave disservice by calling Sharon Berry “token opposition.”

while the 22nd remains a solid republican congressional district, to believe that Berry has no chance to win that seat is to assume that the republican party membership of the 22nd is content with “business as usual.” that is all that kevin mccarthy is offering the citizens of the 22nd.

mccarthy has been groomed by the power brokers of this state to assume the mantle of the 22nd held by the corrupt and insular william thomas, whose connections with jack abramoff forced him to step down from his powerful position in the house, and to not seek relection.

thomas has been the king of this district, and kevin is his pet. Kevin is 100% bought and paid for by the corporate king makers. he has refused to debate Berry. is this because he cannot stand up to the charges of influence and corruption that are dogging his party and his district? he refused to be interviewed on kcbx.

    what is he afraid of?

plenty. look at this congress. look at kevin. they are one and the same. he offers us nothing but corrupt business as usual.

Berry, in contrast, is a real breath of fresh air. a lifelong republican until 2003, when the corrupt and misguided intentions of the current administration became painfully apparent (to americans who were paying attention) in the rush to war.

she changed party affiliation to democrat, so she could challenge the corrupt status quo represented by william thomas. she has everything going for her, and most important yet, has nothing to lose, because she’s a novice.

since mccarthy has grown to believe he deserves this seat, he’s not motivated to serve us if he wins it. he’s a coward who will pimp in the halls of power, doing the bidding of his corporate masters in order to retain his seat.

he doesn’t care for us, why would he. he’s a career pol. he’s a hack.

good riddance to kevin mccarthy: william thomas’ bag boy. no thanks.

    Dear Conscience of the GOP:

Well, Sharon will be on the show Thursday at 6:05. A very nice woman, but you’re all in LA LA land if you think she’s going to carry a district mostly in Kern County. She’ll be lucky if she gets 40% of the vote.

These districts are carved up to protect incumbents. McCarthy will win and win big. I see no way of stopping him. Sorry.

so now you’re only giving mccarthy 60% in a gerrymandered republican district?

hardly a victory over “token” opposition.

    dave, you’re softening.

The exposure of the current Atascadero Council and their group is just the tip of the iceberg.

New information regarding unrealisticly low interest loans to a NEW Assistant City Manager, as well as the VERY WEALTHY owner of the Carlton Hotel also need to be investigated.

A city in financial hurt just 10 months after a major earthquake should not be loaning money to anyone, much less a NEW 90k/year employee.

When did Atascadero get into the banking business? We are in no position to pass out close to a million bucks in loans.

When has a Fire Fighter, Police Officer or any “worker bee” in the city ever received a huge loan like Mr. Lewis?

Time to clean up Atascadero and replace the current council.

Correct to Jim’s post above: The Assistant City Manager, Jim Lewis makes $130K a year – not $90K. Plus he has a $250/month car allowance (compared to King Wade’s $500 allowance and $145K salary).

The 6% loan we made to him for his house in the gated community went through less than 2 weeks after he was hired too!

Sorry Dave but this post of yours belittles your audiences’ intellegence. Do you really expect us to think you are that naïve?

You know Dave, maybe the reason why some candidates will not go on your show is because your biased and have an agenda.

It is the same reason why Nancy Pelosi will not go on Rush or Hannity.

The fact of the matter is O’Malley, Kelley, Jones, Pacas and even the Atascadero City staff have all been on Sound Off with Joe Benson.

It is unfair to criticize these candidates for not appearing on your show. Just accept that you have a bias and deal with the fact some people will not come on your show or station because of it.

You know it is because of your bias that these candidates will not go on your show or station. Do not belittle myself and the rest of the audience on your reasoning for why these candidates will not come on your show or station. You know every well it is because of your bias. Oh and please give me a break with the New Times, you know that Karen Velie and the New Times has a bias as well.

It is truth seeking Dave and Karen have, not bias.
