The Speaker and the Page

If you’ve caught Rush and Sean this week, you know there’s been one primary topic on talk radio: disgraced former congressman Mark Foley and this page scandal. As we say in the media business, this is a story with “legs” and it continues to dominate media coberage. If the media is still covering this next week, Speaker Hastert could be in trouble. He’s trying to rally folks to his cause, but even Fox News is reporting a deep drop at the polls for Republican candidates in the upcoming elections.

And that’s the bottom line, isn’t it? Hastert will have to step down if things don’t change because the G.O.P does not want to lose the house.

Meanwhile, we had some local perspective Wednesday and Thursday. Bruce Curtis tried to dismiss all the allegations, accusing Democrats of being hypocrticial, given Gerry Studds and Barney Frank back in the ’80s. Bruce also felt that the Democrats really didn’t care about the allegations — they weren’t offended by them, but were merely strategizing to make Republicans looks bad.

Then Michelle weighed in last night and reminded us that there was a third sex scandal with Franks and Studds, a Republican named Phil Crane. Crane and Studds were censured by Congress. Tip O’Neill tried to get rid of them immediately, but Studds was re-elected by the people. Michele also discredited the Drudge Report and argued that the Republicans had been lying all along and were now merely covering up to protect the lies.

What do you think? I don’t know how Hastert hangs on to his job. If the polls keep dropping or someone else comes forward with an allegation, he’s history.

Earlier today, the Drudge Report published a story claiming that one batch of lewd IM transcripts published by ABC News were the result of a “prank” by a former House page. The former page, Drudge said, “goaded Foley to type embarrassing comments,” which he shared with friends.

The story did not quote the young man, or say whether any attempt had been made to contact him or his lawyer.

Now, the lawyer for the former page in question, 21-year-old Jordan Edmund, says the Drudge Report article is false. Calling the story “a piece of fiction,” Stephen Jones told the Daily Oklahoman that “there is not any aspect of this matter that is a practical joke nor should anyone treat it that way.”

This afternoon, ABC News published news of three more former pages who had sexual online conversations with Foley similar to Edmund’s.

Why does the page need a lawyer?

However, Matt Drudge was the first to report on the stained blue dress which soldified the existance of the Lewinski affair, so there is an aire of credibility here.

I am a staunch conservative, yet I do not share Rich and Jerry’s optimism on the Republicans winning both houses again, let alone picking up more seats. I hope I’m wrong, but I do not see the GOP handling this crisis correctly, SO FAR. There is still time to turn it.

Besides the obvious safety and family moral issues, the majority of Americans swept the Republicans into office because they wanted their tax cuts that the President championed to be made permanent. They wanted fiscal spending to be kept in line, and pork barrel spending stopped. They wanted the immigration problem taken care of, and they wanted the Republicans to stand up and take charge. None of these things happened, due to some crummy Washington politics (how about that bridge that went to nowhere).
Now you have accusations swirling around, true or not, and the sharks are circling with blood in the water. Americans are short sighted, impatient, and isolationists. Woodward’s book is a defamation of character and many Republicans who only had huevos the size of raisins before the last election now have none. Many people are using the latest as an excuse, as icing on the cake if you will.
The moral question with most Americans is: Did Hastert know about emails to pages that were “over the top”, or were they not “over the top”. If they were inappropriate, the Democratic page rep, along with the Republican page rep, should have been brought on board. Did not happen.
The American people right now want more balance, because they see things OUT OF CONTROL. Whether or not they are is irrelevant. So what we will end up with is one house Democrat, the other Republican, one balances the other or at least that is how it is seen. The Republicans blew the capital they had in their bank account through their own carelessness. They gave mushy guys like McCain a stage.
Pelosi has published her “1st one hundred hours” agenda as the new leader of the House. God help us. On that list is the revocation of all of the tax cuts we now enjoy. Bad news. The good news is, it will be the beginning of the democrat party’s end, and the return to (Ronald Reagan) conservatism!

Brett: Jerry is continuing from the last comment thread.
JerryD: My crack about you possibly being off your meds was a vain attempt to justify the seemingly unending spouting of juvenile name calling (Democants, et cetera), your demeaning insults to everybody who doesn’t think just like you, your near obsessive focus on George Soros and your downright hostile comments towards elected officials because they are Democrats. You accuse me of “cut and paste” when I link to a transcript of one of your heros because he had a plan that called for some very similar approaches to what some of the Democrats have been calling for, in an attempt to show that there are many calls for a change of direction for what is or is not happening in Iraq. Jerry, do you remember a little while ago when there was someone here who savagely hammered on you? I actually spoke up for you when you deleted all of those posts you did. Jerry, I would like to engage in reasoned debate with you or anyone else who wants to talk about ideas, policies, candidates etc, etc,; but could you please bring yourself up a notch or two? Yelling in caps, name calling and calling any plan, program or policy that you don’t agree with as being “treasonous” or “losing the soul” of the Democratic party. You almost sound as partisan as President Bush when he recently equated Democrats who vote in a manner that requires the President to follow the law as terrorists. Do you find yourself admiring George W. Bush when you hear the leader of the free world talking like that ?
As for Hastert resigning, I hope he doesn’t, his incompetent leadership will only help get more Democrats elected.

They are there because we allowed our political leadership to send them there. Jerry,

Here’s a new flash for you, pal. The war in Iraq ain’t over. 13 U.S. soldiers died this week alone.

Bush is merely keeping us in a holding pattern in Iraq and then he’s going to dump it off on whatever Democrat replaces him in ’08. Bush has zero strategy for victory other than to stay the course.

    Amazing. And equally pathetic.

  22. Red Neckersniff
    October 7, 2006 at 7:30 am

I think what Jerry is saying is:
Everything in the Middle East spells I-R-A-N. The people we are fighting in Iraq are financed and equipped and organized by Iran. Many are in fact Iranians. The soldiers who died were probably killed with Iranian explosives and expertise. What the outcome is is dependent on how we handle Iran. If we walk away, or run away, Iran will take over Iraq, and Iraq’s resources of course. The REAL conflict is Iran…a powerful, evil, empire intent on destroying us and controlling the entire Middle East, not just Hezbollah.

So ya got no hand there, Dave. Let’s see, what else we got here…hmmmmmmm.

Final thought: Bob I did read your link, enjoyed it. I noted with interest the author’s referral to the “biggest surprise – Iraqi police”…always amazes me of how many Iraqi police candidates these insurgents have killed, yet they keep lining up to get in the fight – these people want a free Iraq – a lot more of them have given their lives than coalition troops. I wonder…how much conviction would our people here in America have in similar circumstances? And by the way, I don’t blame these guys for being overly rough with captured insurgents (now I’m even saying it…they’re TERRORISTS). When and if we do leave and Iraqis are in charge, they will just shoot them, and I don’t blame them. I guess there is no gun control there.
My favorite though, was the mayor who was kidnapped, and then when the bad guy put down his weapon to start the video, Mr. Mayor picked it up and killed the bastards…right on. Adios.

Bob: Thanks for the link. I have nothing to disagree with the Marine about. It brought back memories for Iraq for me. He’s right about Ramadi, it is a shithole of insurgency. that was the city I worked out of for my year and everything he said about attacks every day only bolsters my point about how irrelavent the “Bush lied about violence in Iraq” line Dave posted from Woodward’s book (who, by the way, wrote a book about William Casey of the CIA AFTER he died claiming he had a deathbed confessional from him– NOT!). But, Bob, your point after that link totally misses what that Marine is saying: It’s a war over there, it’s tough duty, but we are winning every battle. Now, as it was in Vietnam, we just need you naysayers to just pipe down for a little while, stop second-guessing and cheering with every casualty that you are one more dead soldier or marine closer to being more right than Bush, and let us win this thing. Leaving without victory (you let me worry about that term) and that will be truely spitting in the face of all of us that have fought over in Iraq.

Dave, your analysis is more shrill and disconnected from reality every time you give your opinions on Iraq. You, my friend, don’t know what you are talking about. Didn’t you read Bob’s link? Did you hear anything in that Marine officers words that said he thought we should retreat in defeat? I didn’t. I just heard how much he misses home and how bad it sucks in Iraq. He even said that unit reenlistment rates are high. If there is a lack of morale anywhere, it’s not in Iraq.
So, did Bush pick a fight in Iraq? Sure, but since Clinton set the standard that “containing” a problem equals solving a problem, then yeah, he picked a fight there. Was Bush right to go in? I say yes. Saved 20 million people from Saddam, stopped a genocide that had been in process for 30 years and stopped the murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children. If only Clinton had taken action in Rwanda, he might have saved some of the 800,000 that were slaughtered with machettes or who died of cholera in the refugee camps. I tell you what, Dave, why don’t you try blogging to the terrorists over in Iraq, use your same word, logic and rationale that you use here. You know what I’m talking about: You were wrong to go into Iraq; stop killing and torturing innocent Iraqi civilians; you are destablizing the middle east; why don’t you “redeploy” back to Iran and stop the fighting? See, I think the problem here is that Bob and you, Dave, are preaching to the wrong choir. You see, when the terrorists stop their invasion of Iraq, our servicemembers can come home, because then their won’t be all those evil men making life harder for Iraqis. Try blogging them, better yet, try taking “hometown radio” to Tehran and tell them what a mistake it was to invade Iraq. You might actually do some good. AH, but I forgot… I haven’t been to Iraq in two and half years and I am full of shit and don’t know what I am talking about, right?

ABC loses cred on Jordan Edmund so they “produce” two more pages supposedly propositioned by Foley, but they still haven’t sourced the story or offered transcripts.

Gotta love this stuff, as soon as you liberals get the stuffing knocked out of your attack, you don’t say, ‘sorry’, or ‘I was wrong, I take responsibility’, you just go on the attack again. You have to win no matter who you trash or how dishonestly you do it.

Liberals just don’t get it, cowardice and deceit aren’t “morals” and lying is not a “value”.

He was molested as a young person! Wow! If it is not true what I said some time back about MOST homosexuals being confused sexually by a predator adult make, what a coincidence! Just happens to be another question I have for Tim. Maybe Tim is too ashamed still after all of these years to admit he was molested by his “christian” parent.

If the Nancy Pelosi cares so much about gay and other deviant predators, how come she marched three spots down from Time’s celebrated gay pioneer Harry Hay! She had no problem with this strong advocate of the North American Man-Boy love association. NAMBLA don’t get excited Tim in Morro Bay this is wikipedia not their website

Whooooo-weee! You guys are all over the page tonight! Oh…sorry. Meant to tell Rich that Mortuary Bob Woodward The Greatest Reporter That Ever Lived, was ratted out for his death bed confessional with William Casey by Casey’s WIFE! Apparently, there was a little problem, in that Casey was unable to communicate..OOPS.
There is a month to go until the elections, and even though I’m not holding my breath, you democrat fellers got your work cut out for ya. I can see a backfire! A FOX POLL tonight showed 50% of deomocrats disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy right now. Here the stock market is at an all time high, unemployment is hovering around 4%, job growth phenomenal, gas prices going down, companies are investing in alternative energies to get us off of the arab teat. Even Soros and Michael Moore are making good capitalist cha ching because of the efforts made during the last four years. I would say this punishing disapproval % is correlated to Mortuary Bob’s set-up sucker punch, the ‘Crats’ one-two upper cut with Foley’s folly in the media shark tank, and the pervasive fear of the rest of the world. Newsweeks cover accuses the President of the United States of lying. That is a damn shame, and damn wrong.
Americans wrongly view that the “cowboy” persona is why the Western Europeons hate us so badly, which adds to the terrorists hating us so badly…why, if we had a popular dashing fellow like Bill again, the rest of the world would join in and help us defeat evil everywhere! It’s a total crock. If you folks get your way, you will soon find out. I hope and pray, and will work to see that you do not get your way.
As you might have guessed, I like the cowboy persona. I’m glad the office of the presidency was replaced with a man of conviction who didn’t take any crap from Saddam Hussein. I’m glad our country led the way to putting a boot in his ass, ’cause it is indeed the American way. I didn’t forget about ol’ Khadafy either. His country is now hosting about four or five of our finest oil companies pumping away, and his weapons are no more. Cowboys kick ass…ask Mormar, ask Saadam. Rosie O’Donnel, whom I have always had kind of a thing for, brought up gun control the other day following the poor little Amish girls being killed by that sick ___ in Penn as a copycat spree. Rich brought up Rwanda’s genocide under another administration (which I agree could have been prevented). It is THE BEST example of why gun control would not work, ever…almost every single one of the Rwandan’s, over 500,000, were killed with a machete or other tool, except for really small children. Goes right back to the original sin doctrine…man is born with a corrupt and evil heart, and he is unable to save himself, and he is capable of ANYTHING.

the cowboy persona (ORIGIN early 20th cent.: Latin, literally ‘mask, character played by an actor.’) exists only on DVDs.

    enjoy the show.

… unless he’s “saved” (like GW), then he’s capable of anything, and culpable for NOTHING.

    convenient, isn’t it?

I’ve been to the continent. Gotta tell you that I never saw such a collection of effeminate men in my life. No wonder they resent the macho cowboy role that Bush plays; they know they are incapable of playing the cowboy role. Petty jeolosy, pure and simple.

In actuality, Conscience, I have been to “the Continent” as you so fondly refer to it…didn’t rub elbows so well, and couldn’t wait to get home. In addition, Conscience, I also took Latin, so I knew what “persona” was before I said it. So what would “persona non grata” be? maybe you can look it up and lecture me on that one too. ‘Cause that is how I felt on “the continent” when I was surrounded by a bunch of ungrateful, rude, anti-American, cheese-eatin’, no-balls, dainty fingered, surrender monkeys. Of course, I speak in generalities, I don’t mean to paint every single person with the same brush. So “bunch” means “bunch”.
I wouldn’t even care if they just ignored Americans in disgust. But being an “ally” and berating us to our face, publicly, and smearing us in their media, is unacceptable. Our “cowboys” saved their sorry asses. They are totally jealous because they couldn’t handle biz when it got ugly. Hell, we even saved the Germans after we kicked their asses a generation ago.
America invented the cowboy, Conscience! The spaniards have their own, and the Argentinan’s, but ours is unique only to us, like baseball. And there are lots of ’em walking around Conscience…we call ’em “sheepdogs” sometimes…but it’s the same concept. Not fictional, but radio and TV cashed in on ’em (dirty rotten capitalists), and still do.
Wouldn’t expect you to really get it, just like the talking point on the nature of man …I guess I could stick all the Bill Clinton crap (which outweighs Bush by a long shot) up your ass right now since you just had to pick a fight with me instead of an intellectual discussion on the issue, but that would be taking advantage of the GOP’s conscience, and besides, it’s too easy.

I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Great Britain in 2003 while my daughter was completing her junior college year doing study abroad in London. We took a 3 day trip to Paris and another to Venice, with the balance of the time in London. My wife and I both did not wear blue jeans, t-shirts, shorts, sandals, tennis shoes or ball caps, and I don’t remember once being treated rudely, but then I did not expect to be treated any differently than anyone else in the shops, restaurants or museums. At the time we were there, the Enron scandal was plastered on every front page in the U.S., but in England and Europe the news being reported in the English printed papers was about the vacuum of information concerning those who had been sent to the Guantanamo Bay prison. It was interesting to buy one of those European newspapers and read real articles about important matters; if you were looking for Hollywood gossip, you bought a tabloid. Our media sucks.

Glad you had a good time. Reckon much of it is whether you are on business or pleasure, and who you communicate with in english, if anyone, and about what topic…you have to write off a % of a_____’s in any country, that’s a given in that we are human. My Aunt, who is about as meek as a lamb, asked a gendarme if he could help her find her way, she was lost (in the train station, Paris). His answer:
“no”. He turned his back, & walked away. If only he had known how sweet and kind she is, to anyone, and here his profession is to help the innocent. More cowardly behavior. Her trip that she saved for was dampened by one act of rudeness based on what? She is an American (BTW a democrat although I’m working on her, bless her heart). Thankfully, the trip wasn’t ruined.
The UK is an exception in my view to the majority of W. Europeon countries, because they seem to be the only ones who will admit past errors and correct them. The rest of these Oprah-ized countries have failed economic and foreign policies, and they reject and ridicule their only real ally with any kind of muscle…us. I am surprised Mother Russia hasn’t fired up her war machine again, turned back to state-owned everything (they now own their oil pipeline $$$$$$) and taken over some of the big mouths over there.
‘Course we would probably go to their damn aid, AGAIN.
BTW I concur that our media sucks. Way out of whack.

Bob, so when you go to Baltimore, Boston, or Salt Lake City, you should expect to be treated well UNLESS you dress up in stuffy clothes! Guess what pal, I happen to like my Wrangler Blue Jeans, by roach killer cowboy boots, and my plaid shirt, or even my t-shirt that has “Club Git’mo, your tropical retreat from Jihad” on it. Screw the stuck up snobs of these has been super powers if they don’t like my red white and blue ass. Notice you didn’t say much about Australia or New Zealand since they both care about the war on terror since the islams killed a bunch of them in Bali. They are in for kicking ass and taking no hostages on the war on terror. The French and the Germans were in bed with Saddam and his oil for food scandal.

DEAR DEMOCANTS…WHILE YOU ARE WIPING THE EGG FROM YOUR FACES FROM THE FOLLEY SCANDLE THAT BACKFIRED ON YOU…WHY NOT USE THIS TIMES TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS…
    1) WHAT IS YOUR PLAN FOR IRAQ?
    2) WHAT IS YOUR PLAN FOR IRAN AND KOREA?
    3) WHAT IS YOUR PLAN FOR NATIONAL DEFENSE?
    4) HOW MUCH WILL YOU RAISE TAXES?
    5) WHO WILL YOU RUN IN 08′ SINCE WE NOW KNOW THAT AT LEAST 50+% OF THE VOTERS WON’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HILLARY CLITTON

LETS START THERE…WE HAVE MORE AFTER YOU ANSWER THESE

    hey jerry, you arrogant ass

Whats your plan? You’re always spouting off asking what the ‘democants’ plan is. Well, whats yours? I don’t think you are able to formulate anything other than obnoxious comments. Lets have it, republicunt!

MY PLAN IS SIMPLE MICKEY OL BOY!
    1) KEEP REPUBLICANS IN OFFICE…STANDING ON THE MORAL HIGH GROUND NOT LIKE NAMBLA NANCY.
2)KEEP TAXES LOW SO GOOD FOLKS HAVE MORE MONEY TO SPEND ON WHAT THEY WANT
    3) WATCH WALLSTREET LINE OUR POCKETS WITH GOLD FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS AT LEAST! (HINT HINT)
    4) BREAK ALL TEACHERS UNIONS AND START AN AGRESSIVE SHOOL VOUCHER PROGRAM!
    5) BAN FLAG BURNING AND GAY MARRIAGE AS A CONSTITUTIONAL AMMENDMENT
    6) KEEP DEFENSE STRON AND CONTUNUE TO FIGHT THE WAR ON TERROR
    7) FIGHT IRAN ON IRAQUI SOIL UNTIL WE WIN…AS LONG AS IT TAKES
    8) MAKE THE TAX CUTS PERMANANT
    9) TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST ANYONE THAT LEAKS CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS AND HANG THEM ON PAY PER VIEW. THE BILLIONS RAISED COULD HELP PRIVATE SCHOOLS UNTIL THE VOUCHER SYSTEM CLOSED ALL PUBLIC EDUCATION
    10) DO AWAY WITH TENURE FOR COLLEGE PROFESSORS
    11) STOP ALL STATE AND TAX SUPPORTED RETIREMENT PROGRAMS AND OFFER THEM 401k.
    12) OVER TURN ROE V WADE, AND MAKE ILLEGAL ABORTION A CLASS 1 FELONY.

I COULD GO ON…BUT WE HAVE A PRESIDENT FOR THAT.

Jerry, you just fell for one of the oldest Liberal tricks out there. When liberals are losing a debate they do one or more of the following: Lie, deny, obfiscate and counter-accuse.

You see, Mike Ray counter-accused you of having no plan which obfiscated the fact that he doesn’t have a plan for himself. You made the arguement about you by answering him. Now it is YOUR plan that is the topic of debate not his lack of a plan which was the original topic. He also started with the “arogant ass” comment to goad you into comment. See how they work?

    RICH,
POINT TAKEN…BUT WHAT I WAS TRYING TO DO WAS TO GET THESE LEFTIST LIBERAL SORROSITES TO SAY ONE THING ABOUT A PLAN THEY HAVE OTHER THAN RAISE TAXES AND CUT-N-RUN FROM ANY WORLD CONFLICT.
I WOULD STILL LIKE TO SEE ONE OF THEM ON THIS BLOG OR THE NATTIONAL AND REGIONAL LEVELS SAY ONE THING THEY PLAN TO DO!
C’MON BUSH HATERS! SORROS OVERS! THIS IS YOUR CHANCE…SPEAK UP OR SHUT UP!
