Rules of the Playground

Well, if you read the thread of arguments under tne “Obe Down . . . .” posting, you’ll see that both Mysticfire and Kirk in SLO have decided to take their toys and go elsewhere, giving up on trying to argue with the other bloggers. They appear frustrated that they can’t convince anyone with their arguments, especially Bob.

They’ve both come after me repeatedly. Kirk doesn’t like it when I cut and paste articles, but then he attacks me for not proving my points. Which was it, Kirk? Was I depending too much on outside sources and not giving my own opinions, or was it that I was just giving too many opinions and not backing them up? If you go back over the last few months on this blog, I have documented every accusation I have made against the Bush administration, using outside sources and experts.

And Bob has been quite prolific in sharing his links to different articles and he made his case on various issues.

But Mysticfire and Kirk always found a way to dismiss our arguments out of hand without sharing specific evidence to support their arguments.

So good luck, guys, and thanks for participating when you did. Bob and I will continue to offer our combination of evidence and reasoning and analysis to make our case on local and international issues. There are probably a ton of right wing blogs ouot there where you’ll be more comfortable.

    Dave,

You gave it shot, you tried to be hospitable by inviting other points of view onto your blog. But unfortunately, we are in the most divisive time in the country since the Viet Nam/Civil Rights era. Though while I was but a pup then, I sense it’s even worse now. And I think so for a few reasons:

    1) Critical thinking is nearly extinct in the culture—practiced by only a rare few in the media and in the government. And the lack of critical thinking has trickled down to the populace in a truly corrosive way.

    2) Most people don’t like to be disagreed with, and the media has trained them into thinking that the best way to respond to those who disagree with you is to insult and attack them.

    3) People do not read beyond the most superficial accounts of the news and of history. Most subjects are far more complex than a pithy op-ed or blog entry can do justice to, but that’s what most people form their opinions on. It takes a lot of time and thought to read books and policy papers—but to be fully informed, and to be fair to opposing arguments, you pretty much have to, and you have to read beyond your own prejudices too.

None of what I’ve said above has an ideological bias, but of course, those who disagree with it, will find one and flame me!

    Cheers to all!

Wow Dave, nice shot in the back at two former listeners. Thanks for showing your true colors. I’ll be sure to tell everyone I know, not to listen to your show or visit your blog.

    Hi Dave;
I find it odd that someone who
won’t sign their name accuses you of “shooting in the back.”
    Nice program today (8/11) – I
    always enjoy listening to Michelle
mow down the callers who present
the BS they’ve heard on Limbaugh as being factual.
    Also, I liked your monologue
and agree that some callers are
unable to converse calmly with anyone who questions their beliefs. We learn nothing from name-calling – its a waste of time and bad for the heart.

    Dave

I thought you spoke quite eloquently today about the divisivness in our society, and the inability of one side to even hear the other side. I know I am also guilty of this to some extent, and I am really working on that in myself. I work with a guy, and we’ve been friends for a long time. We share the same senses of humor, lots of common experiences and almost nothing in common politically. We do however spend many hours debating various issues. I ask myself why I can be polar-ly opposite him, argue with him for hours and still be close friends, and yet when conservative Bob or Gary from A.G. or JERRYDINAZ make some point I want to wring their necks! If we could all just remember that we’re all in this together, we actually share much more in common than we have differences, then we could get past all this petty bickering and actually start trying to solve these issues that vex us. Thank you for your show and your sense of fair play. Your show has been a big part of my life since 1994 (when I started listening) and I look forward to 12 more years.
BTW – Michelle Dostert is too good not to either be on more or to have her own show. Encourage her to do more in the radio forum

HEY DAVE! YOU KNOW I LOVE YOUR SHOW AND WHAT YOU HAVE DONE, AND ARE DOING WITH IT. YOU SHOULD BE SYNDICATED AND MAYBE THAT’S WHERE YOU ARE HEADED.
AS FOR THE BLOG…HERE IS MY 2 CENTS.
    1) MOST BLOGS ARE OF LIKE-MINDED FOLKS. BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER. PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE BELONGING AND BEING AROUND OTHERS OF A LIKE MINDED. BOTH SIDES DO THAT WELL ALREADY. YOUR BLOG IS A BIT DIFFERENT IN THAT YOU ENCOURAGE BOTH SIDES TO PARTICIPATE.
    2) TYPICALLY BLOGS ARE NOT FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEBATE, BUT FOR THE PURPOSE OF GETTING OUT YOUR THOUGHTS QUICKLY AND SUCCINCTLY. THEREFORE THE PROLIFIC DIATRIBES WITH EMBEDDED LINKS ARE A BIT OVERBOARD FOR SOME AND IN SOME WAYS DISCOURAGES SOME FROM JUMPING IN. I MYSELF WOULD RATHER READ 50 SHORT COMMENTS FROM DIFFERENT PEOPLE THAT THE SCROLL ENDLESSLY THROUGH A 1000 WORD BLOG.
    3) HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT. THE PERSONAL OR IDEOLOGICAL ATTACKS WILL CAUSE FOLKS TO SHY AWAY OR GIVE UP. IN AN EFFORT TO “DEBATE” ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER SOMETIMES FEELS THAT MORE IS BETTER AND THUS CAN FILL PAGES WITH INFORMATION WHEN A THOUGHT OR PERSONAL OPINION MAY BE THE KEY.
PERSONALLY I LIKE TO SEE BLOG ENTRIES OF 50 WORDS OR LESS WITH LINKS TO PERSONAL WEB PAGES FOR THOSE THAT WANT MORE INFORMATION ON YOUR THOUGHTS.
MAYBE THIS IS A NO WIN SITUATION. I HOPE NOT! I LIKE THE BLOG AND OF COURSE THE SHOW. I AM COMPLETELY CERTAIN THAT THE CENTRAL COAST HAS NO REAL CLUE OF THE QUALITY AND IMPORTANCE OF YOUR SHOW…NOR OF YOU TENACITY TO PRODUCE A 4-HOUR SHOW EVERY DAY! YOU SHOULD BE IN A BIGGER MARKET WHERE YOU CAN BE APPRECIATED AND PAID FOR THE VALUE YOU BRING.
SO PLEASE…BLOG ON! I WANT TO KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS, BUT IN A CONCISE FORMAT…VERY CONCISE. NO MORE NAME CALLING, OR PERSONAL ATTACKS.
AND LASTLY A PERSONAL NOTE THE RESIDENTS OF THE CENTRAL COAST. WISE UP! IF FOR SOME REASON DAVE’S SHOW WERE DROPPED TOMORROW, YOU’D ALL BE SITTING THERE LIKE DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS TRYING TO GLEAN INFO FROM TWO PRETTY WEAK NEWSPAPERS WITH NO PLACE TO SHARE IDEAS OR THOUGHTS. SUPPORT THE SHOW…SUPPORT THE BLOG, SUPPORT THE ADVERTISERS, AND IF POSSIBLE…SUPPORT EACH OTHER!

    gee JERRY
nice to have you back so you can insult us all.
I completely disagree about your stated purpose of a blog. I for one can’t stand the short, ‘drive by shooting’ comments. They do nothing to advance the argument. I want serious debate, and this forum is the perfect opportunity for that.

(54 words – is that close enough)

Jerry: I have to disagree with you, again, on one point: IF Dave’s show were to go away for some awful reason, not all of San Luis county would suffer from a “deer-in-the-headlights” vapid look; only those who regularly listen to Rush and Sean first and then listen to Dave would be a loss for news and facts. I don’t listen to either of those talk show “hosts” and I happen to stay fairly current with what is happening in the world. We in San Luis county would lose a great source of information about our local area however if Dave weren’t on the air, so I can agree with you on that point. As to long comments, hey, I’m guilty as all get out when it comes to long posts; if you don’t want to read it all, skim through it or ignore it. Thank you for your input, now go find some lubricant to unstick your caps lock key, please.

    Dave,

I have to say that I think you are a great commentator. You are just so smart. It is such a pain in the ass to be here with all of the hicks and rednecks in this red county you live in. Keep up the good work in enlightening these people.

Okay, looks like we have some troll type activity here, as I do not believe that last post was by Michelle, even thought they went through the labor of setting up a false blogger identification. They should have spelled her last name correctly though, it might have appeared a little more legitimate. It does seem to be a sadly usual type of a tactic from those on the extreme right. Pathetic.

    To Everyone:

Think of this issue in the words of Albert Einstein ….

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Be thankful we have a forum where we can stimulate our gray matter and agree to disagree.

I just want to point out the obvious — the posting from “Michelle Dostier” is not her and not even close to how she spells her name.

    Nice try.
