Is Silas Lyons leaving The Tribune?

The local rumor mill seems to be in overdrive with word that Tribune city editor Silas Lyons is stepping down from the paper with the intention of moving to Redding, in northern California. No final date has been set and there’s no evil conspiracy behind this decision. Silas has accepted a new position at the Redding newspaper just as McClatchey Newspapers move in to take over The Tribune.

This brings an end to the Decade of Silas at the paper. He joined the old Telegram-Tribune fresh out of Cal Poly and has served the paper in a number of functions, including reporter, business editor, columnist, and most lately city editor. Silas is a heck of a guy and very well-liked in San Luis Obispo. He’s often been used as a punching bag by some of his media colleagues (including me) but he’s always taken it in stride. Silas is a good guy who will definitely be missed.

Silas is a dork. I can remember him being on your show saying that we should rename San Luis Mountain to Madonna Mountain in honor of Alex Madonna when he passed away. Madonna was a great member of our community, but Silas was just trying to sound cool.

His behavior with reporing and not reporting certain stories is troubling …..he is certainly not one for “Stickin’ it to the man”. On second thought…..maybe he is “The Man”. Let me think about this and get back to you later.

yah, everything he ever said on the radio sounded like bs; like he was worried about the t-t’s image

his column was always biased to the left or it was just boring stuff i didn’t care about

big deal he’s leaving anyway. who cares?

Thanks for the repport, Dave, but to be honest, who cares? Silas was never much of a columnist and who reads the Trib anyway? Let Redding have him!

I keep picking up my paper in the morning hoping to see some changes from the new owners, but nothing yet. I fear they’ll pay more attention to their other papers.

Silas? Can’t say I know the guy and I barely remember his columns. He always seemed to be complaining about something.

I had contact with Silas and found him to be someone willing and interested in “sticking it to the man”. I follow his articles when I have time; enjoy and appreciate his coverage also and will miss his presence. Truly, the TT has never been known as a publication that is willing to step on toes, always playing it safe. Silas was the only contributor who ever seemed to break that mold.
